Looking for something good for the kids to watch at the cinema or just some good family viewing? Then check out this list of the best new kids movies 2013.

Sick of watching the same kids movies over and over again? Looking to get the kids out the house for a few hours and would like to see something enjoyable too? Then you'll want to know which of the new kids movies are the best and most likely to hold your childs attention. The fun will continue after the movie too with animated talks about their favorite characters and action scenes from the movie.
There are also a number of animated kids movies too on this list, which are not only good for the little ones, but make great all round family viewing with lots of humor! And to make sure you don't miss a great kids movie in 2013 we've listed them in order of release date at the cinema.

Oz the Great and Powerful

Original release date: 8th of March 2013

Genre: Fantasy/Adventure/Family Viewing

Starring: Rachel Weisz, Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams, James Franco and Zach Braff

Plot: If you think back to how much you loved the original Wizard of Oz movie when you were a kid, then it will come as no surprise that audiences are being taken back to Oz once again. However, instead of following Dorothy and Toto, we're going to find out how the All and Powerful Wizard got to Oz, managed to survive and became the leader of the Emerald City.

You'll be captivated by the animations and special effects and how an illusionist has to adjust to a world of magic. He doesn't know the rules of this strange yet beautiful land. What will he do when he meets the Wicked Witches and how will he survive?

Suitable For: Great family fun, but there are a few scary moments for younger children.

Jack the Giant Killer

Original release date: 22nd March 2013

Genre: Adventure/Fantasy/Action

Starring: Ewan McGregor, Nicholas Hoult, Bill Nighy and Stanley Tucci

Plot: A remake of the classic story of Jack and the Beanstalk. Jack's still a small time farmer fallen on hard times. He is given some beans to keep dry and to make sure they never see the light of day. He's also a friend to the Princess and she's whisked away when the Beanstalk grows from the wet beans Jack was supposed to keep dry.

Jack has to make things right by finding the Princess, saving her from the Giant and cutting the Beanstalk down. Jack's life will never be the same again.

Suitable For: All the Family

The Croods

Original release date: 22nd March 2013

Genre: Family/Adventure/Comedy/Animation

Starring: Emma Ryan Reynolds, Nicolas Cage, Emma Stine and Catherine Keener

Plot: Think about how protective your parents are and overbearing. All they want to do is tell you what to do and stop you from having fun. Well in The Croods this is taken to a whole new level. This animated tale is set in pre-historic times when people lived in caves and everything outside was dangerous.

One father believes the best way to protect his family is by never allowing them to leave the cave. He tells stories that always end the same way, with the hero who left the cave being killed violently. However, we all know that the one thing we're not supposed to do goring up, is the one thing we really want to do.

The oldest daughter finds herself outside the cave and her family follow to save her from the dangers found outside the cave. Only they are then cut off from the cave by a landslide and are forced to find a path in the outside world to safety.

Suitable For: Great for all the family as there are plenty of funny moments, where parents can sympathize with the father trying to protect his family. Kids will understand how the kids feel and the need for adventure. The graphics and animation are beautiful and breath taking at parts.

Epic

Original release date: 24th May 2013

Genre: Family/Animation/Adventure

Starring: Colin Farrell, Beyonce Knowles, Steven Tyler and Josh Hutcherson

Plot: A young Leaf man finds himself in a strange place. A young girl has been shrunk down to his size and finds a whole new world was right under her feet the whole time. She quickly realizes she has to help the Leaf men protect the garden, as both her world and their world is under attack.

Expect interesting flights on birds and insects and getting in touch with nature. For me this is life a Bugs Life crossed with the fairy type creatures from Fern Gully.

No doubt there's a message in there somewhere about the environment and being green.

Suitable For: All the family, but audiences of a younger age may enjoy this more than the adults. There are some darker type scenes as some of the characters are portrayed as evil and there is a war between the two factions.

As this film is also from the creators of Rio and Ice Age, it's expected to be a big hit.

Monsters University

Original release date: 21st June 2013

Genre: Comedy/Family/Animation

Starring: Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Kelsey Grammar and Steve Buscemi

Plot: Ever wondered how the monsters learnt their trade in scaring? Well now you'll get a chance to see exactly what they did to learn to scare children. Why, they went to University of course!

Meet Mike and Sully before they were the best of friends at college. Find out what Monsters University is like and the fun and games they get up to while learning their trade.

I have to admit to being a huge Monsters Inc fan and have been waiting patiently for this kids movie to finally be released in cinemas. Another cool feature is that it will be in 3D this time! Check out the trailer above for a really funny scene of what's to come in Monsters University.

Suitable For: Everyone that loves Monster Inc! It's great for all the family as it's the same type of humor from the first movie. There are plenty of adult gags while the kids will still enjoy the story and the characters.

I think this will be the best new kids movie in 2013 and I am definitely going to see this at the cinema.

Although he's small he's really cute.

Despicable Me 2

Original release date: 3rd July 2013

Genre: Comedy/Family/Animation

Starring: Steve Carell, Al Pacino and Steve Cougan

Plot: It's too early to tell you exactly what the plot will be, but it's safe to say it will fun to be reunited with Gru and the girls. No doubt they'll continue to drive him crazy while he makes plans with his little minions.

Suitable For: All ages and genders.

Turbo

Original release date: 19th July 2013

Genre: Animation/Adventure

Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L Jackson, Paul Giamatti, Snoop Dogg and Michelle Rodriguez

Plot: A small snail dreams of living in the fast lane. He's sick of being in the slow lane and would love to be like his hero, who happens to be an Indianapolis 500 champion. Turbo doesn't really fit in and is seen as a little strange and weird by the other snails, who are happy to be normal snails and do normal snail things.

However, when a Spiderman like freak accident happens, Turbo gets his dream and suddenly finds himself racing at super speeds. He won;t let anything get in the way of his dreams.

Suitable For: This movie actually reminds me a lot of Ratatouille, as the little rat wanted to make delicious food, while all the other rats just wanted to eat garbage. In this case, it's about a snail and achieving his dreams against all the odds.

Definitely good for all the family and a great way to inspire kids to always reach for the stars.

Smurfs 2

Original release date: 31st July 2013

Genre: Fantasy/Comedy/Adventure/Family

Starring: Christina Ricci, Hank Azaria, Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays,

Plot: The Smurfs are back and so is Gargamel. In the second installment of the Smurfs, Gargamel tries to create his own evil smurfs in order to harness the power of the Smurfs. However, after making his creations they are unable to do what he needs them to do. He quickly realizes he needs Smurfette in order for his creations to become smurfs.

Gargamel steals Smurfette and takes her to Paris. The other Smurfs ask for the help of their human friends they met in the first film and they all travel to Paris to save Smurfette.

Suitable For: All the Family.

Thank you HollieT. You could always take a friend, that's what I do a lot of the time.
I remember I took my dad to the cinema when I was about 22 years old. He couldn't understand why I was taking him to see Ice Age 2, since it was a cartoon and he hadn't seen the first one. When we came out he thought it was amazing and rushed to the shops to buy the dvd for the first one. Sometimes bug kids will get just as much enjoyment from these movies as little kids. I know I do!

What a fantastic review of these films. It almost makes me wish that my children were younger so that I could take them to see the movies. So well written, with exactly the kind of information that a parent would want. :)
