Blue Star Service Banner
by brl
The Blue Star Service Banner is displayed in homes when a loved one is off to war. But how did this tradition get started?
The Blue Star Service banner is an important symbol of pride and support for military families in times of war. Families with an active duty service member who is at war may display the banner (as may organizations who have a member who is deployed).
The Blue Star Service banner was created by Army Captain Robert L Quiesser in 1917 who wanted to honor his two sons who were serving in World War 1. In no time governmental authorities and the public began to use it too. There was no standard design at that time. Standarization happened during World War 2. Though the banners were rarely displayed during the police action in Korea and the Vietnam conflict, they are used more frequently now that the US is involved in the war on terror (at the time of this writing).
The Blue Star Service banner is a white field framed in red with a blue star in the center. If a family has more than one deployed service member they may add a star for each deployed member. According to the Department of Defense, when displaying the Blue Star Service banner along with the American flag, if they are the same size the American flag should be displayed most prominently. Also, when they are displayed together the American flag should always be larger than the Blue Star Service banner.

If your spouse or child is deployed this is a nice way to honor them and show your pride and support for the troops. You can put it in a window or get a stand to display it outdoors.
This 12.5" x 18" flag is UV, mildew and fade resistant.

American Flag - Blue Star Service Banner Lapel Pin
While most banners are flown, it is perfectly acceptable to wear a Blue Star Service banner as a lapel pin.
Proud parents and spouses can wear this pin throughout the day. When asked what the "other" flag is they may explain about their loved one at war and the meaning of the banner.
This is a very nice gift to give someone as well. They'll surely appreciate you thinking of them when thier loved one is away.
