Butterflies are gorgeous so it is only fitting that your birthday (or any other occasion) cake holds up to that reputation - and the same goes for cupcakes!
There are quite a few different cake pans (both in design and materials) and different price ranges.
You can also choose from a lot of cupcake toppers, edible, paper and more.
Starting the pan selection with Wilton's pan as I only have good experience with them.
This is an aluminium bake pan and the design does not have too much detail which means you will be getting the cake out without any major problems.
Their pans are also very durable and easy to clean.

I am also a fan of silicone molds. You can imagine their flexibility allows you to easily get the cake out of the mold. The cake won't stick to the surface (there might be some crumbs here and there, depending on the density of your batter), and this baby can be cleaned in the dishwasher.
If I had to choose from aluminium and silicone... I could not. Both are great.

A bit more on the expensive side we have the Nordic Cake Pans. This one is a bit more detailed compared to previous two.
This one is also made from aluminium and has a non stick surface so you should not have any problems getting the cake out.
They also offer a pretty amazing cupcake pan, so you can make butterfly shaped cupcakes.
This is another great cake pan. Well a cupcake pan. Well a bit of both.
You bake cupcakes, arrange them into butterfly shape and frost like a one cake. Guests then take their pieces of cake. You can make more than one cupcake cake and frost each in different color. Have a rainbow of butterflies.
Kids will certainly love this.

I think that the edible ones look fantastic! You can get them in many beautiful colors and sizes and they will look great on a cupcake, cake or any other food for that matter.
You could be making cupcake toppers yourself as butterfly is not as hard to cut out and there are a lot of images of them available on the world wide web.
