Cut the towel in half so that the pattern is the same on both pieces.
Row 1: On the edge of one use a tapestry needle to insert a hole about 1/4 inch down. Sc in hole. Make about 3 more holes along the edge approximately 1/2 inch apart and sc in holes. Continue this process until end of row. I've found that if I try to make the holes all the way across first and then crochet the first row, then the fibers of towel close up and it's hard to find the holes. You might prefer to mark each towel with dots with chalk pencil to make sure of equal amount of holes in each. Ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Sc in each stitch across. Ch 3, turn.
Row 3: Dc in each stitch across. Ch 1, turn.
Row 4: Sc in first stitch. *Ch 1, skip one sc then sc in next sc. Repeat from * until end of row. Ch 1, turn.
Row 5: Dec one at beginning of row. Repeat row 4 until there are 2 stitches left at end of row and dec one. Ch 1, turn. Repeat row 5 until there are 6 stitches left.
Loop Section (for hanging towel)
Next 17 rows: Sc in each stitch. Ch 1, turn.
Next row (buttonhole): Sc next 2 stitches, ch 2, sc last 2 stitches. Ch 1, turn.
Next 3 rows: Sc in 6 stitches. Ch, 1 turn. Finish off.
Sew button approximately one inch below first row of 6 sc. Be sure to test the position with the buttonhole before you fasten it.
Repeat for second half.
