Get a Cool Doctor Who Sonic Screwdriver

by kajohu

Not just any screwdriver, but The Doctor's sonic screwdriver! This device is used in the Doctor Who series for many purposes, including picking locks and tracking alien life.

Wouldn't it be cool to have your own sonic screwdriver just like The Doctor in the British science fiction television program "Doctor Who"?

My husband and I have only recently discovered this fun long-running TV program, and we're huge fans now. We're both intrigued by The Doctor's multi-purpose sonic screwdriver that allows the Doctor to open doors, access computers, scan for alien life, and remotely control other devices, among other uses.

Of course we'd love to have one just like his. Although finding a "real" sonic screwdriver won't be possible, we've found a few great replicas of the different sonic screwdriver models that The Doctor has used over the years.

The Doctor Who Sonic Screwdriver

The Doctor's Multi-Purpose Tool

If you're a Doctor Who fan, then you're familiar with The Doctor's sonic screwdriver, a multipurpose tool that allows the Doctor to open doors, access computers, scan for alien life, and remotely control other devices, among other uses.

Wouldn't it be cool to have your own sonic screwdriver?  You can buy different models of the Doctor Who sonic screwdriver....although you won't be able to use your device in quite the same way as The Doctor!

Some of the models that are available are prop replicas that look like the different sonic screwdrivers that The Doctor has used over the years.  These are great for adding more authenticity to your Doctor Who costume, or of course just to have around for fun.   Some of the models you can buy are actually useful tools themselves, such as a real screwdriver or working LED flashlight.

The Tenth Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver

The Tenth Doctor, played by David Tennant, uses a sonic screwdriver that looks very similar to the one shown here.   Of course his does much more than this one...but...this replica does light up and it has cool sound effects from the TV program.

It also includes a UV ink pen nib to write secret notes and a UV light to read your secret writing (not that The Doctor does this, if I remember correctly, but it's still a fun feature!).   There's a standard ink pen nib too, if you'd like to write your grocery list and have it be visible!

It comes with 3 AG13 batteries, and is 7" when closed and 8.5" when extended.

$22.50

The Eleventh Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver

Clawed Sonic Screwdriver Used by Matt Smith

This is a replica of the latest model of sonic screwdriver on the Doctor Who series, and used by the Eleventh Doctor, played by Matt Smith.  This version, according to the Doctor Who saga, was created by the Tardis itself after the previous model was destroyed.

It's larger than the tenth Doctor's sonic screwdriver, and has a spring-loaded extension, with a bright green light and sound effects.

There's one button to turn on the LED light and sound effects while this cool prop is closed, and another button to turn on these effects while the sonic screwdriver is in its extended form. (Check the instructions to figure out how this works!)

You'll look cool trying to save the world with this sonic screwdriver replica!

About 9" long, or 10 inches when extended.

Requires 3 L1154 batteries which are included here.

A Real Screwdriver Resembling a Sonic Screwdriver

Based on the Eleventh Doctor's Screwdriver

Doctor Who 11th Doctor's Diecast Sonic Screwdriver  $29.99

Doctor Who 11th Doctor's Diecast Sonic Screwdriver... ScrewdriverThis 8 1/2 inch die-cast screwdriver is nicely designed to resemble the eleventh Doctor's sonic screwdriver. It has sound effects and it lights up like The Doctor's model, but it's also a real, usable screwdriver.

It comes with three reversible tips for small, medium, and larger screws. One end of the tip is a Phillips head, and the other is a flat head. You can store the tips in the base of the screwdriver when not in use.

So even though you won't be able to scan for real alien life with this screwdriver, you'll be able to use it for practical chores around the house!

Batteries are included.

So, Do You Think You're a Big Doctor Who Fan?

Shows Three Sonic Screwdrivers

Doctor Who 11th Doctor Sonic Screwdriver

Real screwdriver

The Third Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver

From the Classic Doctor Who TV Series!

Here's the third Doctor's sonic screwdriver, as shown in the second video above.  The third Doctor was played by Jon Pertwee from 1970 -- 1974.   Functions of this sonic screwdriver included opening doors and cutting through walls, detonating mines, and detecting traps....as well as removing screws.

The replica featured here lights up, has a spinning action, and 2 sounds that are spring-load activated (hold down the collar to activate sound effects).

About 8" long.

Flashlights Based on the Doctor Who Sonic Screwdrivers

These two LED flashlights are smaller than the prop replicas shown above, but resemble the sonic screwdrivers of the tenth and eleventh Doctors.   They're not meant to be used for heavy-duty play-acting, but to give you some light in a dark space!

The first one shown here gets better ratings on Amazon than the second one, perhaps because there's an error in the description of the second flashlight.   It says that it extends like the "real" sonic screwdriver, but I don't think it does.   These are just flashlights, not role-playing props!   They come with the required batteries.

River Song's Future Sonic Screwdriver

River Song's Future Sonic Screwdriver

Doctor Who River Song's Future Sonic Screwdriver $22.99

We just watched the episodes Silence in the Library and Forests of the Dead where this cool futuristic sonic screwdriver is featured, along with the introduction of River Song, a future companion of the Doctor.

This sonic screwdriver is more advanced than the Doctor's own screwdriver, but River Song says it was his in the future, and that he gave it too her.   Mysterious!  And a great couple of episodes!

This replica is 7" long, and has interchangeable red and blue LED tips, and it has sound effects.

Tardis Toys and Other Cool Tardis Stuff The Tardis is The Doctor's time and space machine -- he can travel anywhere in time and space. Yes, it looks like a 1960's British Police Box, due to its broken chameleon-like properties.
