Drinkwell Platinum Pet Fountain

The Platinum fountain is one of the newer fountains from Drinkwell and it's a much improved version over the Drinkwell Original fountain produced by the company.  Let's start with the basics:

• Constant 5 inch falling stream of water
• Holds up to 168 ounces of water
• Replaceable filter that keeps water clean and fresh
• Low voltage motor that keeps water running while creating as little noise as possible
• Use with both cats and small dogs

So there you go, the very basics of the Platinum pet fountain.  The water capacity is a huge improvement over their Original fountain, as that one held only 50 ounces of water.  With 168 ounces of water available, you should be able to go 10-15 days without refilling the fountain if you have a single, moderate sized cat.  The fountain will probably last about half that time if you have a small dog drinking from it.  Of course, water spillage can reduce that timeframe so if your pet if a little messy, you might find yourself refilling the fountain a little more often than that.

The replaceable filter for the fountain is an awesome feature that ensures your pet is getting the cleanest water possible.  Filters should be changed every 4-6 weeks to make sure the water stays clean for your dog or cat.  The filters for the fountain are relatively cheap, about $2 each and can be purchased in packages of 3 to 12.

The fountain runs on a small motor to keep the water flowing so there is minimal electricity usage for the unit when you are running it.  This also means that noise from the fountain will be very minimal while it's operating.

I wanted to share a few quick tips of getting the most out of your fountain for the least hassle.

1. Place a plastic mat under the fountain when you put it into use.  Most pets are not neat creatures and they will spill water everywhere.  A mat will reduce damage to your flooring as well as allow for easier cleanup of the area.
2. Take the time to clean your fountain at least once a month.  Drinkwell recommends you rinse the fountain out once a week, but not everyone has the time to do this.  If you can give the fountain a thorough cleaning once a month, you should be able to avoid a dirty and malfunctioning fountain.
3. Be prepared to replace parts on the Drinkwell fountain every once and awhile.  While it would be nice to purchase the fountain and never have to worry about another cost again, that's not likely to be the reality.  You will have to buy replacement filters every once and awhile.  You may also have to buy other parts if you fail to clean the fountain on a regular basis as well.
