It is important, at any age, to work on your cognitive skills. Mental exercises help to keep the brain active and fit, and crafting is a great way to do this.

The beauty is that you don't have to be able to sew a shirt or knit a sweater or do a project that requires woodworking skills in order to reap the benefits from doing crafts. There are some easy crafts seniors will all love doing, no matter what your skill set in crafts is.

Crafts also help those who are suffering with dementia to keep active and engaged which makes crafts for seniors or the elderly worth considering.

Create Decorative Bottles

One of Our Favorite Simple Crafts for Seniors

Decorative bottles can add style, color and fun to any room. You can easily create decorations based around your personal taste and personality. Whether you want to put in the kitchen, living room, or bedroom, these decorative bottles are easy and fun to make.

Materials You Will Need

  • Clear bottle(s) of any size or shape.
  • Variety of colored sand (For other projects you may want to use different shaped pasta or dyed rice)
  • Ribbon (optional)

Steps In Creating Your Decorative Bottles

Step 1 - Clean the bottle to ensure that it will display the sand without smudges. Let dry completely.

Step 2 - Decide which sand color you would like to put in first, second, third, etc. Have the sand ready to be poured as you may only have one hand free during the process.

Step 3 - Pour your first choice of sand into the bottle. Proper symmetry is important here as you want to create a unique design that is multi-layered. If you want a layer that is flat, then simply pour in the sand and lightly shake the bottle around to create an even layer. If you want a layer that is slanted, hold the bottle on an angle and fill, and then slightly move the bottle around to get your desired appearance. (Depending on the size of your bottle opening, you may want to use a funnel to ensure that you do not spill. Plus, it is just easier in many cases with a funnel.)

Step 4 - Your next layer should be ready to go (as per step 2), so start pouring it in. If you have made a slanted layer previously, then allow all of your desired sand to pour in and hold the other sand in place before you tip the bottle back vertically; otherwise, you will end up with specs of colors throughout.

Step 5 - Repeat step 4 until your bottle is full.

Step 6 - Seal the bottle and decorate with a ribbon around the neck of the bottle.

Make A Simple Bird Feeder

There are many ways to make a bird feeder, but none as easy as this. All you need to do is finish off a toilet paper and grab the roll to start your project.

Materials You Will Need

Toilet paper roll
Organic, No-Sugar Peanut butter
Bird feed
Cooking sheet
Tree that you keep your eye on

Steps To Make a Simple Bird Feeder

Step 1 - Lay the bird seed out on the cooking sheet.

Step 2 - Put a small layer of peanut butter on the outside of the toilet paper roll.

Step 3 - Roll the toilet paper roll covered in peanut butter firmly through the bird seed. Because the toilet paper roll can be easily destroyed by heavy hands, push down from the inside as you move the roll along the bird seed.

Step 4 - Place bird feeders over a branch that is in your view and wait for the first guest to arrive.

Note: If you want to make the peanut butter yourself, to ensure the birds will only be getting peanuts, put about 2 cups of unsalted peanuts in a food processor and process until desired consistency. Use some for the birds and some for your toast!

Make a Scrapbook Page

Easy Craft for Seniors to Enjoy

You don't have to make the whole scrapbook to get the pleasure from scrapbooking. On a scrapbook page, you can include photos, pictures, and sayings that can all be framed for a unique looking memory.

Materials You Will Need

  • Scrapbook page of preferred color (Can be found in craft store.)
  • Photos or other flat keepsakes
  • Photo glue stick or adhesive dots
  • Alphabet stencil
  • Pencil or markers to write with (Important that they are acid free and will not bleed.)

Steps To Make A Scrapbook Page

Step 1 - Pick the theme of your scrapbook page. You may want to do it around a wedding, birthday, season or person - just to name a few ideas.

Step 2 - Once you decide the theme, find some pictures or keepsakes that remind you of that theme.

Step 3 - Place the images and keepsakes on the scrapbook page to create a unique look. Play with the angle of the pictures and keepsakes to create a finished look you really enjoy.

Step 4 - Glue the pictures down in their respective spots, and use the glue or adhesive dots to put smaller objects on the page.

Step 5 - Once everything is glued down, you can use the alphabet stencil to write cute, short notes on the page. For instance, you may write '55 Birthday!' or 'Memories I Cherish', it all depends on your theme and what comes to mind.

Step 6 - Once you are done with the page you may want to frame it to display to everyone that comes over, or you may be inspired to create a whole scrapbook!

Make Easy Candle Or Flower Holders

This is one of those easy crafts seniors can do to display candles, flowers, or other objects in. Putting candles in them will create a nice ambiance in the room, however. Before you start the project, you may want to practice with the dimensional paint to get the hang of creating designs that look good to you.

Materials You Will Need

  • Glass jar or bottle of preferred shape or size
  • Glass paint (2 colors)
  • Dimensional paint
  • Paper plate

Steps in Making Your Easy Candle Or Flower Holders

Step 1 - Place one glass paint color into your glass jar so that the bottom of the glass is completely covered.

Step 2 - Rotate the jar to spread the paint from the bottom to the walls and continue until all the walls have some paint on them.

Step 3 - Hold bottle on its side and add the second glass paint color, continue to turn the jar around so that the paint covers all of the walls.

Step 4 - Put the glass jar on the paper plate, upside down, and allow the paint to drip down. Every 10 minutes, move the jar around the plate to prevent sticking. This step will take about an hour.

Step 5 - Turn the jar right side up and let dry.

Step 6 - Use the dimensional paint to create your own pattern on the outside of your newly painted glass jar. Get creative and have fun!

I like all these ideas for senior hobby crafts. I draw simple and nostalgic coloring pages for adults who enjoy art, and have discovered through my web site statistics that many care homes and hospitals print out my artwork for senior coloring art therapy use.
