Free Summer Activities for Kids

Instead of renting a spot at the local lake, let your kids camp out in the back yard. A tent and a few sleeping bags can equal tons of fun.  There are memories to be making smores and telling ghost stories under the stars in the back yard.  Let them invite friends over for a fun filled night in the backyard!

During the summer months, museums will often host free family days.  This will not only be loads of fun for your kids, it will also help them continue to learn during the summer months. Be sure to add this free activity to your agenda during the summer by calling ahead of time to find out when free family day will be hosted.

A bucket of chalk and a side walk can provide your kids with hours of free fun!  If you don’t have a concrete drive way or sidewalk near your home, take them to the local park and get busy making art on the sidewalks.  This fun activity is sure to draw the attention of all of the kids in the neighborhood.

Many churches will step up to the plate and offer free activities for children in the summer. Vacation Bible School is just one example of a free activity that will be offered by churches in the area. Take advantage of these free events as they are often filled with fun for kids and other members of the family. Look in the newspaper to find these events or simply pay attention to road signs when you drive. Many churches will advertise on their signs. 

During the summer, your local library will host free reading programs for your kids to attend.  This will encourage a love of reading in your kids and also be easy on your pocket book.  Call the library to find out the summer reading schedule. Summer reading programs usually include storytelling, magic shows, food, and crafts and you won’t have to pay a dime.
