Free Timed Typing Tests

by ryank

Take a free timed typing test to find out your typing speed! The sites featured here are awesome.

If you have stumbled across this page via a search engine then it is highly likely that you are searching for free timed typing tests! And that can mean only one thing, you wish to ascertain your typing speed. There are hundreds of websites offering to analyse your typing speed but, unfortunately, most of them are awful generic pieces of code and are set up to sell you a meaningless and unaccredited piece of paper for a specific amount of money. Often these websites will make a test easier than it should be, and will be too generous when providing you with the results. Nobody is going to purchase a certificate telling them that they have a typing speed of 25 wpm, put it that way. Some will however be overwhelmed with pride when they are told that they have a typing speed of 60 wpm, the equivalent to a good touch typer - the truth is that they will often add 50% to your speed in order to flatter. The answer is to find two or three of the very best free typing speed tests and calculating your average, this article is intended to help you with this.

Test Your Typing Speed

I have actually tried and tested numerous free online typing tests whilst researching the article 3 Online Typing Tests For Free. I did doubt the credibility of one of those websites, so instead I will introduce you to the remaining two. I would recommend taking both tests, ascertaining your average typing speed, and the consider taking steps to improve it. Unless of course you discover that you are in fact the Usain Bolt of the typing world. I managed to ascertain using these tests that my typing speed is 48 wpm, just 2 wpm away from being classed as a 'touch typer'. Here are the sites:

  • GoodTyping.com This is by far the most comprehensive free resource that I have found for online typing lessons, offering 27 guided lessons starting with the very basic and finishing at near-perfection. With a bit of practice in between lessons, you could be touch typing within a couple of weeks of perserverance! This site is entirely donation and ad-supported, so you don't have to pay anything if you don't wish. Lessons are provided for 20 different keyboard layouts, and in 6 different languages!
  • TypingWeb.com This site has been recommended to me, and my first impressions is WOW! An actual web 2.0 interface, a refreshing suprise. It looks to be very advanced, very user friendly, and it offers free typing lessons, free typing games, and free officially sanctioned certificates to prove your typing speed to prospective employers upon completion of the free course! It also has a free teacher/tutor portal and many teachers sign up to assist lessons with kids! Quick easy registration, no downloads, start immediately.

Improve Your Typing Speed

Those two sites offer both typing speed tests and free tutorials, and were featured on the page Free Typing Lessons For Beginners, however there is still no real substitute for some good typing software. The most prestigious offline typing tutorials are those offered by Mavis Beacon, and a fairly recent version can cost you as little as $10!
