Google Street Maps Go Under Water

by Jerrico_Usher

Now you have the power to "see" the world in more ways than one. Google earth is amazing, Google Street View is amazing on a daily basis but now you can see IN the water!

If you loved Google street view your going to love the new partnership that allows Google to grab/use images from another company's underwater "mapping" endeavors! You can now dive into shallow waters and see incredible fish and scenery just like you'd use street view!

This definitely adds a layer to the realm, rather the documenting of our realm. You're no longer limited to streets, roads, or sidewalks, now you can take a journey through some stunning panoramic images from "under the sea". You may just see a mermaid... ya think?

Exploring subaquatic worlds, including Australia's Great Barrier Reef, Hawaii's Hanauma Bay, and of course the Apo Islands in the Philippines! They've only mapped and released 6 of the world's coral reefs and much more of the water will be recorded in time.

See It In Action!

The images are available for Google through a partnership they made with a company called "Catilin Seaview Survey". This is a major scientific study of the world's reefs. They used a specially designed camera (multiple cameras in one place) to capture the underwater glory. It's capable of a 360 degree view so as the divers swim through a scene they are capturing 360 degrees around them!

Land-Lubbers Enter The Sea!

Google's expansion of it's mapping tool allows people to enter an adventure including colorful reef fish, coral forests, and even some rare turtles! The program/partnership's goal is to simultaneously create a powerful and vivid browsing (adventuring) of underwater reefs but also to conduct the first highly detailed study of the coral reefs health and composition.

You don't need to be an experienced scuba diver or even to leave the comfort of your desk to see these things, hell, you don't even need to know how to swim!

Snorkel

So if you're in the mood to "see the world" you can do it in even more definition and in even more places than you previously could! In the world before the internet these things were only possible through television and magazines (unless you actually went there).

National Geographic was a great resource for this stuff but it was always stills or clips you had no control over where to go. In Google technologies you not only see cool things, you get to pick what you see, when you see it, and where you see it. All without leaving the comfort of your desk! If that's not cool I don't know what is! Enjoy your adventure!
