I never paid much attention to the ingredients of my skin care until my fourth child, Lizzie, developed the most dreadful exzema on her face, at around 14 months of age. Lizzie suffered dreadfully with this exzema until I consulted a homeopathic doctor who managed to find a solution that was natural and less worrying than steroid creams.

This experience made me more aware of the toxic chemicals to which we expose our children and ourselves in the course of our normal, daily life. So I started to read up on it and was so appalled at what I found to the extent that I threw out many seemingly innocent soaps, creams and shampoos and either replaced them with products containing only natural ingredients or I made my own.

On this page you will find some natural skin care recipes that are simple to make from ingredients that are easily sourced, plus books that are full of home made skincare ideas.

Sugar is frequently used as the base ingredient for Natural Body Scrubs and when we think of sugar we tend to think of white sugar. But you might like to try brown sugar the next time you mix up a home made body scrub.

Brown sugar is more soft and moist than white sugar. This is because brown sugar is full of molasses. Brown sugar grains are also much smaller, which makes them perfect for natural skincare.

Skin sheds old cells and renews them around every 28 days. However, this process slows as you age. Restore your skins healthy glow by exfoliating with a natural body scrub.

A natural body scrub is usually a mix of a granular substance, mixed with other liquids, including essential oils to cleanse, exfoliate and moisturise the skin. The exfoliation removes the dead cells on the surface of the skin, making the skin feel smoother and softer.

The granular substance can be sugar, or it can be salt, oats, Epsom salts or baking soda. This is then mixed with either massage oil, honey, milk, cocoa butter or coconut oil.

The body scrub is made by using a granular substance mixed with a specific liquid with essential oils to cleanse, exfoliate and moisturize the skin by removing the dead skin cells and moisturize the skin. The main basis of body scrub is usually Dead Sea Salt, Epsom salts, sugar or baking soda generally mixed massage oil, essential oils, honey, milk or similar products.

This all natural body scrub recipe is very simple to make and leaves your skin feeling soft and smooth.

4-5 teaspoons sugar or salt

1 teaspoon light olive oil

You can add fresh herbs to your bath to hydrate and soothe the skin, but who wants to be sitting in a tub full off floating leaves and twigs? Try making this Natural Bath Recipe: herb "soup".

Gather a handful of fresh herbs and add to a pan

Cover with water

Add 1-2 tablespoons cider vinegar

Cover with a lid

Simmer over a low heat for 20 minutes

Strain off the liquid and discard the herbs - not forgetting to add them to your composter

You can either add the herb soup to your bath or use a sponge to cover your body after you have showered.

The cider vinegar extracts more properties from the herbs than water would on its own and it also creates the proper acid balance for your skin.

Vinegar health benefits

The acid content in vinegar makes it a natural bactericide, making it suitable for using on minor cuts and abarsions and some skin ailments. The anti-inflammatory properties of vinegar means it can be used for wasp stings, insect bites and skin irritation such as Shingles and sunburn.

Treat Acne with Vinegar

Simply mix two tablespoons of white wine vinegar with one cup of boiled water, that has been allowed to cool.

Wash the skin before applying then dab the solution onto the affected area two or three times a day.

Note: As with any product you have not used on the skin before, ALWAYS test on a small area first. Rinse off at the first sign of any irriatation or reaction.

There’s not a huge amount of information to be found about using powdered milk in Home Made Skincare recipes, but it seems that those who do use it are raving about it.

Milk contains lactic acid, which acts as a natural skin exfoliator to remove dead skin cells gently and leave you with a natural glow. But while exfoliating the dead cells off your skin is a great way to get glowing, smooth skin, care does need to be taken, particularly with dry or skin that is easily irritated. Always use a natural moisturiser after you exfoliate and never rub the skin too harshly. Also make sure that the water you use is warm and not too hot as this can lead to unsightly broken veins.

Powdered milk can be used in a variety of ways, including simply mixing with water and use to cleanse and exfoliate face and body or you can mix with your normal facial cleanser to make it more exfoliating

½ teaspoon honey

1 egg yolk

1 tablespoon dried milk powder

Mix into a paste and apply a thick layer to the skin. Leave on for 20 minutes and gently remove with a washcloth rinsed in warm water or under the shower.

Do not use if skin is broken

Juice of 1 lemon

1 tablespoon natural yoghurt

2 tablespoons powdered milk

2 tablespoons fine oatmeal (baby oatmeal works really well)

Mix to a paste – if it is too runny, then add more powdered milk to get the paste to the desired consistency.

Splash face with warm water to open the pores. Apply the paste and leave on for 20 minutes. Rinse using a warm washcloth or under the shower. Splash on some cool water to close the pores.
