Pesticides are dangerous and generally unnecessary; when it comes to killing ants there is no need to use them at all. In fact, their are several ways to destroy an ants nest without the use of chemicals. If you want to kill a nest of ants then your options are somewhat limited when it comes to techniques involving general household products, although the pipe tobacco method can be effective at destroying a nest. The other techniques are largely intended to prevent ants from entering your home or killing them whilst they are inside your house. The alternative to home remedies is to simply purchase a safe and natural over the counter remedy, some of which I will introduce at the end of this page.
How To Kill Ants Without Pesticides
Pesticides are dangerous to the environment and a pretty inhumane cause of death, choose natural products to kill the ants in your home and yard!
Kill Ants With Pipe Tobacco
One effective method, and the best one for ants nests - apart from purpose made products of course - involves the use of pipe tobacco. Simply obtain some pipe tobacco, perhaps an ounce, and soak it overnight or for around ten hours in water; the water should be warm at first. Filter the liquid through or through a decanter or drainer and throw away the soggy tobacco. Then, pour the brown liquid over the top of the anthill and leave alone. The ants should overdose on the nicotine contained within the liquid and pass away. If this proves unsuccessful then it is likely that the ants nest is very large and will require a larger quantity of tobacco to be used.
Baby Powder Trail Stopper
This method will not kill an ants nest, but will stop an ant trail for a significant period. Simply follow an ant trail back to its source, then plug up the holes with white glue, soap, blue tac or a similar material. Now, pour baby powder on top of the trail for the whole length (buy via the link above). Every ant which comes in contact with the baby powder will die. The ants inside of the nest will remain alive, and likely dig themselves a new hole, but will probably not use the trail again for some time.

Boiling a kettle and pouring it onto a group or trail of nests will see those ants die instantly, whilst pouring down a nest will see a large proportion of the ants from that nest die. But, it will probably not kill off a nest in its entirety, as ants nests contain numerous passages and tunnels which will remain unreached by the water. This may seem an inhumane way to kill ants, however it is actually amongst the quickest ways to kill ants - they will die instantly on contact with boiling water.
Natural Ant Killing Products
There are however a number of great pest control products on the market which use 100% organic and natural ingredients, making the process entirely safe. These are likely to be much more effective than the home solutions suggested above at killing large quantities of ants, or possibly even entire nests. They contain no harmful toxins or chemicals, ensuring that your activities will not result in the pollution of groundwater or the contamination of your land.
