I am a new grandmother of a grandson who is indeed the apple of my eye.  He is beautiful, he is adorable, and I know he'll grow into a wonderful young man someday, given the loving care that he receives from his parents and other doting relatives.

Besides the toys and other fun things I'll undoubtedly get for him as he grows, I also want to occasionally give him small special gifts that he can remember me by when he gets older.

It's easier to find keepsake gifts for girls, but here are a few that I've found are suitable for young boys.  Older boys may not be as sentimental about these items -- but then again they may surprise you!

I could see a young boy in pre-school or early grade school enjoying this small porcelain figurine of a young boy protecting his kitten from these playful pups.  Do you see that this small figure is wearing his "super hero" cape?    I've known a number of young boys who want to see themselves as heroes to the weak.

The base of this figurine includes the sentiment, "My Grandson, My Hero", to remind your grandson that he's indeed a "super hero"  in his grandparents' eyes.

I absolutely love these Willow Tree figurines by Susan Lordi.  These beautiful pieces evoke the tenderness felt by the grandparent toward a grandchild.  The Grandmother figurine especially tugs at my heart-strings, since my grandson is currently about the same size as the baby with the Grandmother.

These figurines would look nice in a baby's room, and later put on a special shelf to be taken down for a young grandson to handle under supervision, perhaps when grandparents come to visit, or alternately to remind a grandson about his grandparents when they can't visit often.   (Our grandson and family will be moving out of state in a few short months.)

These lovely figurines would also make good gifts from the parents to the grandparents.

We're a family of readers.  I started reading to my sons very early, and I'll be doing the same with my grandson.

While these books aren't exactly "keepsake gifts" in the strictest sense, your grandson will love having you read these books to him as he snuggles up next to you, or by his parents when you can't be there.

"I Loved You Before You Were Born" is about a grandmother eagerly awaiting the birth of her grandchild, and is imagining all of the things he'll do when he's born.   NOTE:  This is from the viewpoint of the paternal grandmother with a living spouse, to a biological grandchild.

"The Night You Were Born" celebrates the birth of a baby in this picture book, where all the creatures rejoice at the arrival of the new unique baby.

"Wherever You Are, My Love Will Find You" has the speaker promising adoration and support forever, as with "My love is so high, and so wide, and so deep, it's always right there even when you're asleep".

These books are suitable for preschoolers through 2nd or 3rd graders.

Here's another figurine that would work well as a decoration in a baby's or young boy's room.

This guardian angel keeps your grandson safe, and plays the tune "The Wind Beneath My Wings".

Handcrafted porcelain with platinum filigree and accents, with the phrase, "My Grandson, My Joy" painted on the side.

Another special musical gift for your young grandson is this music box in the shape of a note from you.  Inscribed on the front in 22K gold is "Dear Grandson", and a message continues inside saying, "You fill my heart with pride.  All My Love."

There's a lovely image of a light-house on the cover, with a "stamp" and a clasp to hold the box shut.

This music box plays, "You Light Up My Life".   About 4.5" wide.

Boys love boxes to hide away small treasures and keepsakes!   My husband still has his wooden treasure box from when he was a child (and it still includes a snake skin and a thumbnail that fell off after a thumb injury -- good boy treasures!).

Give your grandson a treasure box with a note and a photo of you and him inside, and a couple of small "treasures" to get him started (candy, interesting small stones, a few coins).

Do forewarn him that the box is not to hide away frogs or worms!

You adore your granddaughter! Here are a few jewelry gift ideas for your granddaughter that will show her how special she is in your heart.
