Lalaloopsy Dolls

Learn about how the Lalaloopsy Dolls came to life and why they make such popular toys.

How Did the Lalaloopsy Dolls Start?

Bitty Buttons dolls debuted in 2010 and quickly became the hit of that year’s holiday season. The line’s name was changed by its creator, MGA Entertainment, to the Lalaloopsy dolls shortly after their launch. Their tag line introduces them as “Sew magical - Sew cute.” Each doll is created with its own fictional theme story. His and her “legend” includes the “birth date” and the fabric from which she or he was sewn, as well as a name that sums it all up. Each one has their own special pet.

These charming dolls are presented as dolls that once were only made of rags but came to life magically at the moment the sewing of their last stitch was complete. The People’s Play Awards named this toy line the best of that year’s category of “Large Dolls” in 2010. “The Early Show” on CBS named Lalaloopsy dolls as “the hottest toy of the season” in November of 2010. The eight original dolls were 13 inch tall rag dolls. Today there are 29 of these large dolls. In fact, the line has grown from its size at its original launch to now having 48 different doll characters in both large and small sizes by November of 2011.

Why Are the Lalaloopsy Dolls So Popular?

These whimsical and fun toys are very popular with youngsters, especially girls, from ages four and up. Each has its own personality and is special in its own unique way. There are 13 inch tall dolls, mini Lalaloopsies (approximately six to eight inches tall), and an entire collection of accessories and play sets for the dolls. Children love them because they are whimsical and very cute. Their clothes are colorful and fun and go well with their button eyes and happy faces. Parents like to select dolls that match their children’s personalities and interests, such as Specs Reads-a-lot who loves books or Sprinkle Spice Cookie, who loves to bake.
