Motorcycle Backpacks

by CRfan

A backpack for riding a motorcycle has many features specific to the rider like high-strength fabric, reflective patches and a waterproof liner.

Storage space is not very plentiful while riding a motorcycle, as the space under the seat may hold your keys and your cell phone, if that. This is especially true with a sport bike. One way to transport your things is with a regular backpack. Motorcycle backpacks, however, are a better choice because they have special features that were designed just for the motorcycle rider, and they also will last longer

Ride Like No One Can See You

When you are riding a motorcycle, you have to watch for everyone else, because they may not see you and are certainly are not looking for you, so having them see you is most important. For this reason, motorcycle backpacks have a lot of reflective panels and patches, and they also come in very bright colors. There are bags that have armor and padding built in. CE approves some of it, the same as the kind of protective padding you find in the backs, shoulders and elbows of motorcycle jackets.

Motorcycle Specific Features

When selecting from a variety of motorcycle backpacks, always make sure the one you choose fits well and does not move while you are riding. It should hug your body and not shift from side to side. Backpacks made for motorcycle riding come in fabrics that are stronger than regular backpacks and have fabric that grips your clothing. When you are wearing gloves, you do not want to take them off every time you want to get something out of your backpack, so they are made with large zippers that are easier to manipulate. Some of the packs have panels that expand when you need room, even large enough to accommodate a full face helmet, and fold back up to save space at other times. On a long ride it is important to stay hydrated, and some backpacks include a hydration bladder instead of carrying water bottles.

A Different Option

Although not technically a motorcycle bag, the bags from Mountainsmith are small, lightweight, tough and have a lumbar belt to keep them secured to your waist.  They are also just a great everyday bag.  I've had one for over 7 years without any signs of failure.

Anyone who uses a motorcycle to commute or just needs to carry things and have enough space should consider choosing from the many motorcycle backpacks available. Because they are designed with the motorcycle rider in mind, you will be able to find the exact right backpack for you, with the special features that will make your ride more enjoyable.

One important thing to remember is that no matter how much padding and protection a bag has, it is never a good idea to carry metal objects like a disc lock inside.  Imagine landing on a heavy, metal object at 70mph.  Put these things in the underseat area or in a tank bag or saddle bag.
