Pumpkins in Halloween

Traditions and culture have references to pumpkins from many centuries. There is a fascinating line of phrase changing in the history of pumpkin. The phrase pumpkin originated from the Greek word which for "large melon" means "pepon”. French chose to call it pompon and the English transformed pompon to “Pumpion”. The Americans gave the final name pumpkin to the fruit.

Native Americans were fond of this fruit; they would roast them on fire and ate the delicious flesh. During the festive events, the pumpkin tops were chipped off, the seeds were removed and herbs, spices were filled in to prepare tasty dishes. For sweet dishes, milk, cinnamon and honey were used to fill the inside of a pumpkin before baking it. Pumpkin was a favourite dish with our ancestors and it features in many cultures and cuisines.

Pumpkin is also about learning the traditions while enjoying the fruit.  The real fun lies in reading out spooky stories and pumpkin poems to the kids and also dressing up in creepy, crawly pumpkin costumes.

In particular, I find the Halloween shower curtain and the pumpkin posters, wall decals and watercolors particularly appealing.

Your subheading Pumpkins in Halloween especially interests me since my family traditionally uses the pumpkin shell as carved container of candied, jammed, jellied pumpkins and as non-carved container of soups and vegetables.

So, yes, I like the artistic side of Halloween and Thanksgiving pumpkins as long as they are not scary or unsettling. What would Halloween and Thanksgiving be like without carved pumpkins and pumpkin scents, tastes and textures?!
