Quilt In A Day Books By Eleanor Burns

by fitzcharming

Make beautiful heirloom quality quilts using Eleanor Burns strip piecing method and your sewing machine. She's written over 75 books on how to make fast easy quilts.

Over 30 years ago Eleanor Burns began writing her popular Quilt In A Day Instruction Books series. It was a revolutionary way to make a quilt quickly and easily by using a rotary blade to cut fabric in strips, and using an assembly line method of machine quilting. She got the idea for the strip piecing method while browsing scrap fabrics at a square dance costume sewing shop.

Since that time the technique has become an accepted way of making a modern quilt. Eleanor has Quilt in a Day books on strip piecing, applique, scrap quilting, crazy quilts, paper piecing, piecing stars, triangles, and squares, and lots more. She shows you how to layer the quilt and make the binding after the top is complete. You can also find Quilt In A Day DVDs if you're more of a visual learner, and she has her own Television show and lots of examples on You Tube.

The Quilt In A Day Log Cabin Pattern book was the book that started it all and is still one of the best sellers. My first Quilt in a Day book was the Single and Double Irish Chain Pattern. I've made a couple of them and although I did not finish them in a day because of my own schedule, the book had concise step by step instructions, big pictures, and is still one of my favorite quilt books.

To Make A Quilt In A Day You Will Need A Rotary Cutter

A Rotary Fabric Cutter looks like a pizza cutter but has very sharp blades that will cut through several layers of cloth. Today's rotary cutters come with a protective safety latch to protect from accidents when not in use. Get in a habit of closing it every time you put the cutter down. There are different sized blades to use for large and smaller cuts, and handles that are made to fit well ergonomically. It's a good idea to change the blade as soon as you feel it getting dull so your fabric cuts stay precise.

Rotary Mats Are Made To Conserve The Blade In Your Cutter

Rotary cutting mats are made from rubber material with and have a slightly rough surface that grips the fabric when you lay it down. The rubber is hard enough that the cutter doesn't leave deep grooves when fabric is cut. And it's designed not to dull the rotary cutting blade quickly. A rotary mat will have a grid mark on the top to guide you in laying out your fabric evenly before making your cuts. There are many sizes and manufacturers allowing you to choose a mat that's right for your space.

Rotary Rulers Guide The Blade Across The Fabric

Using a rotary ruler gives you the perfect quilt fabric cut. A large see through ruler with measurement markings is used to mark the length and width of fabric to be cut. It is laid on top of the fabric and your cutter will glide along the edge. It's best to choose a ruler with small grid lines for versatility. There are lots of sizes and shapes of rotary cutting rulers on the market but I just use a standard 8" x 24" size. Other quilters like to have a variety of rulers on hand for specialty cuts. I'm not that advanced yet.
