Raising Funds For Non Profit Organizations
Affiliate marketing is one of the easiest ways to earn money for your organization, if you are careful of the vendors that you choose.
Using Affiliate Marketing as a Fundraising Tool
Anyone who has ever been involved in any non-profit organization will be able to attest that fundraising is an ongoing effort, and most organizations never have enough funds to do everything that they want to do. With the global economy causing job losses all over the world, even more people are out of work and in need of help paying their bills, and filling their daily needs of food and shelter. That means that nonprofit organizations need to work even harder to help serve the public, and need even more funds to do so.
While there are always the old fashioned ways of raising funds for nonprofits--bake sales, car washes, and selling wrapping paper to your friends and family, in this age of internet shopping, it makes sense to use the online tools at hand to raise funds for nonprofits.
One such tool is affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing is a very easy way to raise funds for your organization by partnering with a company or companies online. Since affiliate marketing is online, all an organization needs to do is find a company to partner with, create an active link, then pass out the link to potential donors. It takes much less effort on the part of the fundraising team, and less time on the part of the sales force to earn at least as much or potentially much more money than they would have through bake sales, and other small fundraising projects. Affiliate marketing may not be able to take the place of soliciting checks from large donors, but it can take the place of costly, and time consuming fundraising events.

How Does Affiliate Marketing Work?
Affiliate marketing is the term used when people or companies market for other companies by placing links on websites, emails, blogs or other methods thereby becoming marketers for the company. For instance, if I am an affiliate marketer for Amazon, I can get links to Amazon products like the ones in this article, and if someone purchases an item through my link, I get a small percentage of the sale.
Each company works differently, but affiliate marketers most often earn money by getting a small percentage of a sale of a product or service over a period of time. For instance, Amazon currently gives between 4% and 8% commission on sales of products that are purchased immediately after someone clicks on a link. Commissions can vary depending on the quantity or dollar amount of sales, and on the length of time from the original click. Companies also have a "cookie" which determines how long after the original click you will earn a commission. This can be 24 hours or 90 days, and each company is different.
Using Affiliate Marketing for Effective Fund Raising
The critical part of using affiliate marketing for raising funds is to have a target market of people willing to purchase from the company that you are partnering with. However, when you are part of an organization, that is the easiest part of this entire fundraising plan.
You can choose a company that you feel comfortable partnering with, then let all of your organization's members know how to purchase the products so that your organization earns the funds from the purchases. Then you can sit back and let the company that you are partnering with do the rest. They will take the orders, ship the products, then pay you a commission. Most affiliate companies pay out within 30 to 60 days after the sale of the products.

Letting People Know About the Fundraiser
When you are planning your fund raising strategy, you will want to spend most of your time deciding how to spread the word about your fundraiser. Here are some ideas about how you can let people know about the fundraiser.
- Send out at least one email to your members containing the link to your fundraising partner company, explaining how the fundraiser works.
- Announce the fundraiser at all of your events.
- Create flyers with the fundraiser information including the link to your partner company.
- Provide your members with postcards and emails that they can send or give to their friends and family about the fundraiser including the link.
When choosing a company to partner with, you should choose a company that fits with the theme of your organization. That way you will get a higher percentage of sales. However, if that is not a possiblity, you can always sell generic items like wrapping paper or gift baskets. There are several companies who will offer a higher percentage to fundraising efforts and have fundraising programs already set up.
Should Your Fundraiser Be Long Term or Short Term?
Deciding whether your fundraiser should be short term or long term is up to your fundraising team. Your team will have to decide whether you will get better fundraising results for your nonprofit organization with several short term fundraisers or one long term fundraiser.
Your organization can use affiliate marketing for either a short or long term fundraiser. You may find it better to run more than one affiliate marketing fundraiser simultaneously. Whatever strategy your organization decides to use, affiliate marketing is an excellent choice to help raise funds.
