The Amazon Kindle is a great device, a true innovation in fact, but there was one major problem documented with the Kindle 1st Generation - and indeed the 2nd Generation - and that was the short battery life. And I don't mean the length of time that you can use the Kindle for before needing to charge, I mean a battery which dies completely! Numerous customers complained that there batteries became defective after just a few months, and if you have stumbled across this page then chances are that your Kindle 1st Generation battery has died too. Thankfully, Amazon made it very easy to replace your own battery - unlike Apple who have moved towards making it near-impossible in their latest products.

Buy a replacement battery for a first generation / original Kindle reader.
Replacing Kindle 1 Battery
The problem finally seems to have been fixed in the 3rd Generation versions, with less customers complaining about the life of their Kindle batteries. Thankfully, replacing a Kindle battery is not too expensive and it is also perfectly viable to keep and charge a second battery as a spare. If your Kindle reading device is still within warranty then I would suggest asking Amazon to replace your battery free of charge, otherwise you will need to invest in your own.

Amazon Kindle 1 Replacement Battery
This battery is precisely the same one which came with your device, and is sold directly by Amazon themselves. Unsurprisingly, it doesn't have a great customer feedback rating - it seems that the problem was a product design fault and not a batch fault. Costing around $20, I would recommend looking at suitable batteries from alternative providers; otherwise, you may find yourself have precisely the same problem again.

DekCell Replacement Battery for Amazon Kindle 1
And this battery from DekCell seems to be the most popular of the alternatives on the market, with an average Amazon customer rating of 4/5 (against 3/5 for the Kindle battery above). DekCell make a great battery, there is no denying that - the best replacement batteries for early iPod models were also produced by DekCell. This battery will also cost you significantly less than the Amazon own brand product. This 1530mAh rechargeable Li-ion cell battery should solve your problems, consider purchasing two if you travel long distances and never be left without reading material again!

Lenmar Battery for Amazon Kindle
Another well recieved alternative is this 1530 mAh Li-Poly NoMEM Battery by Lenmar which also has an average customer rating of 4/5 stars, many customers have praised the battery life of the Lenmar with some stating that they have moved from charging their battery daily to twice weekly! This battery costs around the same price as the DekCell, personally I would perhaps choose the DekCell over this battery purely on the basis of my prior positive experience of their products.
