Resident Evil: Retribution (2012) Movie Review

by squidooprincess2012

Resident Evil: Retribution (2012) is the fifth film in the Resident Evil series. Fifth, you say? Do you need another Resident Evil installment? Here’s my personal review.

In "Resident Evil: Retribution (2012)", we follow Alice in her fight against the Umbrella Corporation and the Red Queen as they continue to wreak havoc to humanity.

Zombies are all around us, on the prowl for human flesh, lurking in the shadows to prey on human beings.

But is this movie worth your time? Find out more in this review as I walk you through it.

CAVEAT: I don’t play Resident Evil (the video game), so this review is based on my judgment as someone who loves to watch a lot of movies.

I. Plot Overview

The movie starts with a replay of some scenes in the previous Resident Evil movies, with Alice explaining what they are. Then, we are taken to a fight scene between the Umbrella Corporation’s soldiers and Alice and her friends. But Alice falls into the ocean when she tries to escape the debris of an exploding helicopter.

Then, the director takes us back to when Alice and a girl named Becky were trying to flee from a hoard of zombies. While Alice managed to save Becky by asking her to hide in the closet, Alice’s husband / partner who turned to a zombie caught up with her and kills her.

When she wakes up, Alice finds herself towel-clothed at a security holding cell. While seeking a way out, a woman appears asking her why she turned away against Umbrella. Alice recognizes the woman as Jill Valentine, a former Special Operations Agent who became friends with Alice as seen in Resident Evil: Apocalypse. Jill asks her again, but when she Alice responds by asking where her other friends in the ship are, Jill vanishes and a loud, shrill sound is let out, torturing Alice. This continues for one or two more scenes.

Then, a computer generated voice informs everyone of an unauthorized access to the main computer. The security system is disabled, so the central computer needs to re-boot, which will take exactly one minute. In Alice’s cell, two blocks open, one containing a suit and the other serves as an exit passage. Then, we see Alice clad in a “badass” suit.

When the computer is back on, Jill realizes that Alice has escaped. So she orders all soldiers to be alert and commands the laser killing machine activated. Alice heads towards the exit, and when she’s out, she finds herself in a city that appears to be Tokyo.

Then, we see Alice at what she does best.

III. Main Cast and Roles

  • Milla Jovovich - Alice; used to be the head of security of a facility owned by Umbrella called “The Hive”; got infected with the virus but unlike the others, this only made her stronger
  • Sienna Guillory - Jill Valentine; former Special Operations Agent who was brainwashed and controlled by Umbrella through the red scarab on her chest; she and Alice met and became friends in Resident Evil: Apocalypse
  • Michelle Rodriguez - Rain Ocampo; she played two roles in this movie - as part of Jill’s team hunting down Alice and as someone who Alice met while fleeing a hoard of zombies
  • Aryana Engineer - Becky; the girl who calls Alice “mother”; the same girl who Alice finds when she was finding her way out of the facility
  • Johann Urb - Leon S. Kennedy; the leader of a group who helped Alice get out of the facility; he is with 4 other men
  • Li Bingbing - Ada Wong; part of Leon’s group; got caught by Jill during an encounter as she and Alice were trying to escape the facility

IV. What I Like About the Movie

1. The return of Jill Valentine
I can still remember Jill in Resident Evil: Apocalypse. She was strong, arrogant, and had short hair. But now, she’s back with a vengeance. In Retribution, Jill is bolder, has a smashing outfit, and BLONDE! For a split second there, I thought she stole the show -- sorry, Alice.

2. Girl power to the max
Sorry boys, but in this movie, girls rule. Alice, Jill Valentine, Rain, and Ada -- what more can you ask for?

V. What I Don’t Like About the Movie

1. Recycled looks
Ada Wong’s outfit looks similar to Alice’s red dress. And Alice’s outfit makes you think of Johnny Depp in Edward Scissorhands.

2. Same plot
What do you expect? Alice is captured, she wakes up naked or towel-clothed, and someone lets her out, and the fighting starts. The virus is never contained. There’s always a clone, and there’s always a sequel.

3. Huh...he’s alive? She’s alive? How did that happen?
Some characters are coming back and there’s little or no explanation attached to these re-emergences. It’s like the director just puts them back for the sake of putting them back.

4. The story wasn’t going anywhere
One hour and they’re still miles underground trying to get out.

5. I miss the old Alice.
She seemed tired and weak in this installment. Some back flips and that’s it? I get it. Alice isn’t injected with the T-virus, so she doesn’t have any super-human abilities. But since the story isn’t going anywhere, they could just wowed us with a lot of fighting scenes with beautiful choreography. Or at least with cool effects.

VI. My Recommendation

There’s something lacking about this movie. I’ve seen all Resident Evil films, but the plot is the same, and the characters keep coming back from the dead without or with little explanation, and somehow, my craving for fight scenes with great choreography was not satisfied.

That said, I suggest that you watch Resident Evil: Retribution only if you run out of good movies.
