Most security camera systems haven't fundamentally changed in recent years but, the advancement of technology has made everything better. You can get incredible clarity, precision recording, smaller cameras, and much more sophisticated manipulation for an increasingly lower price. I liken the drop in price / advancement in technology to the television industry and how big screen tv's that were huge and clunky used to cost tons of money, then it was high definition, then slimmer plasma tv's and so on.

You want to purchase the best quality equipment at the price closest to your budget and that best suits your application. Obvioulsy, the same security camera system the Pentagon uses won't be needed for your gas station.

Wired Cameras vs. Wireless Cameras

The first option most buyers are faced with is whether to buy a wired or wireless security camera system. The advantages that wired systems have is they're lower in price, you don't have to power the camera locall, they are more reliable, and provide the best video quality. Wireless's advantages are easy installation and are a bit more vandal resistant.

When shopping for a security camera system, you're going to be slammed with tons of options. Buyers need to know exactly what kind of recording they want to do before they buy otherwise, they can end up purchasing too much camera and overpaying or purchasing a camera system that doesn't meet their needs and leave them vulnerable.

The biggest kinds of cameras are:

  • Dome Cameras - smaller, dome shaped cameras you typically see in retail spaces. They are nice because people don't know exactly where the camera is pointing.
  • Infrared Cameras - ideal for surveillance in completely dark settings. They use IR illuminators to accurately view in the absence of light.
  • Box Cameras - the traditional security camera that many people recognize. It is also called a "full body" security camera.
  • Pan/Tilt/Zoom Security Cameras - they can be pricey but their manipulation is awesome. You can even remotely control what you record with a joystick. These are used frequently in casinos.
  • Spy Cameras - are pretty self-explanatory. They're small and designed to not be noticed. These are effective cameras for "covert" applications.

If you're purchasing a security camera system, you need to determine if you need indoor cameras, outdoor cameras, or a certain amount of each. If you're installing an outdoor camera, be sure to invest in weatherproof security camera housing and that the camera itself is weather resistant.

With DVR"s, you really need to know what you want or you'll be throwing away lot's of money. A standalone DVR is sufficient for most systems but you can purchase a PC card to record footage on your computer. DVR's vary in storage space and operating system. Most are run on a Linux system because of it's stability and ease of use.

Some DVR's allow remote access and can be even pricier. It's possible to stream live video from your DVR to your smartphone. This is a pretty awesome feature if you'd like to check on your children's safety or how effective your employees are while you are gone.

There are lot's of cost-effective options for your security camera system. What the entire buying process comes down to are your needs and your budget. It is recommended that you sit down with a professional that you trust and go over what you want to cover and what your most important needs are.
