Snake Eye Cupcakes (Or Dinosaur, Dragon or Reptile)

by TerriRexson

These reptile or snake eye cupcakes are simple and effective. Great for a snake, dragon, reptile, animals or nature themed party.

These reptile eye cupcakes work well for a variety of party themes. I first made them when my older son was crazy about dinosaurs. My boys have since got interested in knights and castles so they became dragon eye cupcakes.

And now my boys are crazy about snakes and reptiles in general. So they're snake eye cupcakes.

What ever kind of reptilian creature your kids are into, these cupcakes look great and are really simple to make. They can easily be adapted to make reptile eye cake pops too.

Reptile Cupcakes for a Birthday Party or Event

Snake, Dragon, Dinosaur, Lizard, Gecko

These reptile eye cupcakes are very easy to make and look very striking. Kids love them and they are simple to make.

The work well for various party themes:

  • Nature or animal themes like jungle, safari or zoo that feature reptiles, lizards or snakes
  • Explorer themed parties like Indiana Jones
  • A knight (or princess) and dragon party where they become dragon eye cupcakes - add some edible gold glitter for a bit of magic
  • A GI Joe snake eyes party or a LEGO Ninjago snakes theme party
  • An Indian themed party with a snake charmer
  • A Chinese or Asian themed party with dragons
  • A dinosaur themed party. I first made these cupcakes as dinosaur eye cupcakes, see dinosaur cupcakes for some additional ideas.

Prep time 60 min  -  Total time 60 min
Ingredients for 12 servings
12 cupcakes or 24 mini cupcakes  • Green or red fondant  • Yellow fondant  • Black fondant  • Jelly or Jam

Bake or Buy Cupcakes

Use your favorite white or chocolate cake recipe or mix to make 12 cupcakes or 24 mini cupcakes or enough for your guests. Mini cupcakes are best because then you can give each guest a pair of snake eyes.

Make the Fondant Eyes

Roll out the green fondant (use a fondant rolling pin and mat and dust with confectioners sugar for the best results as it can get sticky.) Other colors like red work well too for the main eye color.

Cut circles of fondant to fit on top of the cupcakes - you could completely cover the topic of the cupcake if you like.

Add smaller circles of yellow fondant and black fondant pupils - I shaped those by hand.

And make green fondant eye ridges and add them on.

Stick the Eyes to the Cupcakes

Spread a little apricot jelly on the top of each cupcake and stick the eyes on top. You can use any flavor of jelly or jam that you have around but apricot is traditional (I had a Saturday job in a bakery decorating cakes as a teenager) because it's sweet without being overpowering.

Kids would probably appreciate a nice dollop of bright red jelly as they bite into the snake eyes though!

Use a Mini Cupcake Pan to Make Pairs of Snake Eyes

It's more fun if kids can have a pair of snake eyes each. Or dragon or dinosaur eyes! Use a mini cupcake or muffin pan to bake your cupcakes and they'll be able to have two cupcakes each without giving them too much sugar!

Variation: Snake Eye Cake Pops

Or Dragon Eye Cake Pops

You can easily adapt these snake eye cupcake to become cakepops. Just cover your cake pops with green fondant and add the other fondant pieces on top. You'll probably want to make a bigger eye ridge.

Ready to Use Fondant

I always use ready to use fondant for kids party cupcakes. It's quick and easy. You don't have to stick to green for the main color for your snake eye cupcakes. Red works well for snakes and dragons. And brown is a good color for snakes, dinosaurs and other reptiles.

Terri these cupcakes are very attractive. I'd just serve them to grown ups and let them assume that they're just an abstract design. I live by the ocean and the blues would fit in perfectly. Of course I could have some fun and tell them what they are! Great idea.
