Soy Milk Recipe

by samsara

A recipe on how to make your own soy milk. Tasty, easy, healthy!

Making your own soy milk is really easy and the taste of it will be 1000 times better than any store brand. You don't need any culinary skills to make it perfect.

You can use any soy beans you like (my favourite is yellow soy).

Easy to make, delicious to drink!

Homemade Soy Milk

Homemade Soy Milk

Prep time 10 min  -  Total time 70 min
Ingredients for 10 servings
10 oz (250grams) soy beans  • 2 - 3 quarts (2 - 2.5L) watter

Wash the soy beans with cool water. Let them soak overnight in a cool area.

Next day rinse the soy beans.

Put the soaked soy beans into the blender (food chopper does a decent job too). Try to grind them as much as possible.

Put the water and grinned soy beans into a large bowl. Cook on medium fire. Stir occasionally as you wait for it to boil. Pay extra attention when the mixture will be closing to the boil heat as it will foam really quickly and it can go over the top easily. When it boils cook it on low fire for about an hour (stirring occasionally).

Strain it into another bowl (use as big of a strain you can find). Press down the soy pulp to squeeze out as much soy milk as you can. Put the soy pulp (okara) to good use (you can store it in the fridge).

Let the soy milk cool and it is ready to be served. It can be stored in the refrigerator. In a well closed bottle it can last up to a week.

What to do with soy milk?

Just a few ideas

You can use soy milk as you would any other milk.

  • you can make super tasty milk-shakes (they are perfect if you have just switched from cow milk as it will help you to get used to the taste)
  • pancakes! Pancakes with soy milk are yummy! If you are making crepes you don't need to add eggs if you use soy milk (perfect for people that can't eat eggs - for any of the reasons)
  • if you drink your coffee with milk, try the soy milk instead. It will have a fuller, more creamy taste.
  • ice cream
  • you can make tofu (recipe coming soon)

Thinking About Making a Lot of Soy Milk

If you plan to make soy milk for yourself (or friends) on a more regular basis I would advise you to consider getting the soy milk maker.

You will still need to soak the beans to use it but the machine will take care for everything else (in a short time). Well everything except clean itself.

Samsara, this is a great wizzle! It's always good to know how to make some of these things. I look forward to seeing your article on making tofu.

Good idea, yes I could add it just before serving either way.

@katiem that would work, I usually add cocoa before serving. If you were to add it while cooking you might need to shake or stir before serving it. Will try it with vanilla when I make the next batch to see how it works out.

I had no idea, my two daughters and I love soy milk, the two of them go through a lot of soy milk alone. Hmmm this is awesome, thanks. I think I need the soy milk maker. Some organic soy beans and I'm golden! My girls especially like chocolate and vanilla soy milk, you think I could add real vanilla extract and cocoa to the mix?

Just for the record, soy milk is amazing in everything you would other wise use any type of milk.
