I remember the Stick Horse.

When I was a child, we didn't have a lot of toys. There were 5 of us kids and we kept each other entertained by playing "pretend" most of the time. We had a few dolls and play cars as well a couple of balls. I remember playing with my brother and sister. But I especially remember playing with my brother and his stick horse. My brother played with his toy stick horse all the time. He would pretend to be an old time sheriff from the wild wild west. He was always trying to save me (even if I didn't want to be saved). He was always running around with the horse, making a noises and trying to sound like he was riding a galloping horse.

In those days, we didn't have all the electronics and fun toys of today. But don't feel bad for us. We had fun. And it didn't take much to entertain us. This simple and inexpensive stick horse gave us hours our fun and entertainment. And now that I'm a Mom, looking back, I realize that playing with a stick horse encouraged pretend play and really gave us children a chance to explore our imagination. I mean, we could be anything that we wanted to be.

History of the Stick Horse

Stick horses have been around for years. The earliest stick horse we created in the late 19th century. Back then, the stick horse was a simple horse head attached to a stick with a string to hold onto. Simple, yet it generated years and years of fun for kids.

The good news is the stick horse is still found in toys store today. Now toy stick horses come in a wide variety of colors and styles. Many of them also make different sounds.

Easy Ride'Um Brown Horse

This soft stick horse by Mary Meyer is perfect for a boy or a girl. It has a nice fuzzy mane and it sounds just like a real horse. It gallops when you run with it and it neighs. The mane is the perfect length for kids to grab a hold of but not so long that it could cause a strangulation or chocking hazard.

How to Play with a Stick Horse

Kids are so creative and will come up with many ways to play with a stick horse. But here are some of the ways we played with stick horses as kids. Maybe you will want to share these ideas with your child.

  1. Have a horse race.
  2. Play cowboys and Indians.
  3. Pretend you are on a farm and you are breaking in your new horse.
  4. Pretend you have a show horse and fix his hair. Make him extra pretty.
  5. Have a Horse jumping contest.
  6. Ride it while fighting off bad guys!

I had a stick horse. I don't remember too much about it except that it was red.
