Choose wooden toys and your child or children will love them and play with them for hours.
Call me old fashioned but I believe wooden toys are still the best and many times preferred to other toys. My son had great fun playing with his wooden building blocks because he could use his imagination. Children like to dream, and wooden toys do inspire their creativity. He had wooden building blocks from which he could build houses and garages. Wooden cars and trains which he used to maneuver around with. A wooden rail road which he could build up to whatever he wanted to.
I have noticed that children, when they receive all these well thought out and manufactured plastic toys, they play with them for a while but then lose interest. The reason for this is they can't use their imagination. The toys had been manufactured for this purposes only. As the saying goes "Children like doing their own thing", and why not.
It could also be that wood has a warmer touch than plastic. Children don't identify their feeling but their instinct guides them.

I recognize the giant learning road rug as well as the Melissa and Doug brand, Maria, and thank you for sharing with us your view on how wood toys provide children the opportunity to use their imaginations.
I think so but the manufacturers can't produce sofisticate plastic toys to sell at £20 or £30 or £40 Thank you for your comment.

I still think you cannot beat these type of toys. They have longevity and never go truly out of fashion
