Amish Friendship Bread is delicious, you do need friends to give some of the friendship starter. It will need a little attention by using it and giving the starter away!

The baked bread makes lovely gifts for any occasion, everyone enjoys homemade cooking! You might put some pounds on because it is yummy.

There are ten variations, to name a few there is the banana nut, chocolate chip, apple cinnamon, pumpkin, cranberry orange, lemon, carrot to mounds bar! Hope you enjoy the bread and makes some new friends.

Bread Starter Recipe

  • 1 cup flour

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 1 cup milk


  • Use gallon Ziploc bags.

  • Do not use a metal spoon or bowl.

  • Do not refrigerate the starter but you can freeze it.

  1. Day 1: Do nothing.

  2. Day 2, 3, 4, 5: Mush the bag to mix it.

  3. Day 6: Add one cup of flour, one cup of sugar and one cup of milk. Mush the bag to mix.

  4. Day 7, 8, 9: Mush the bag. Release air from the bag twice daily.

  5. Day 10: Add one cup of flour, 1 cup of sugar and 1 cup of milk. Mush the bag to mix.

  • Pour three one cup starters into three Ziploc bags. Keep one for yourself and give two to friends with the instructions.

  • Use the remaining batter to make the bread.

Basic Amish Friendship Bread Recipe



  • 1 cup oil

  • ½ cup milk

  • 3 eggs

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

In a separate bowl mix:

  • 2 cups flour

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ½ teaspoon baking soda

  • 1 ½ teaspoon baking powder

  • 1 cup chopped nuts

  • 1-5.1 ounce box vanilla instant pudding


  1. Mix the dry ingredients with the liquid ingredients.

  2. Pour into two large or four small loaf pans.

  3. Spray the loaf pans with cooking spray.

  4. Sprinkle the bottom of the pan with cinnamon sugar; also sprinkle a little cinnamon sugar mixture on top of the loaf before baking.

  5. Bake in a preheated 325 degrees Fahrenheit oven for 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Variations for Friendship Bread

  1. Start with the basic recipe each time.

  2. Bake for 45 to 1 hour until the toothpick comes out clean.

Apple Cinnamon


  • 1 cup of raisins

  • 1 medium apple, diced

Banana Nut


  • cinnamon


  • oil to 1/3 cup


  • 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract

  • 3 bananas, ripe, mashed

  • ½ cup nuts, chopped

Chocolate Chip


  • cinnamon


  • 1-5.1 ounce box of instant chocolate pudding

  • 1 cup milk

  • 3 teaspoons cocoa

  • 3/4 cup chocolate chips

Mounds Bar


  • cinnamon


  • 1-5.1 ounce box of chocolate instant pudding

  • 1 cup milk

  • 3/4 cup chocolate chips

  • 1/2 cup coconut



  • Cinnamon


  • 1-5.1 ounce box of butterscotch pudding

  • 1 cup milk

  • 1 cup of butterscotch chips.



  • cinnamon, nuts and vanilla extract


  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1-5.1 ounce box of lemon pudding

  • 1 cup milk

Strawberry Cheesecake Friendship Bread



  • oil to 1/3 cup.

  • cinnamon to 1 teaspoon


  • white sugar


  • 1 cup brown sugar

  • 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice

  • 1 cup pumpkin purée


  • Increase the cinnamon to 1 tablespoon.


  • 3 medium carrots, shredded

  • 1/2 cup raisins

  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg

  • 1/2 cup chunky applesauce

  • 1/2 teaspoon clove

  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Bake in abundt pan until the toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Delicious with cream cheese frosting.

Cranberry Orange


  • Milk


  • ½ cup orange juice

  • 1 tablespoon grated orange zest

  • 1 cup dried cranberries

HI, Trey. You give three. 1 cup bags of starter to friends, If you have more than one cup, and do not have anyone to give to, freeze it. To use frozen starter just thaw at room temperature and use it as usual.

I have a question: I'm keeping all my starter to bake with. I used one cup and have about 3 cups left. Can it sit on the counter all week until I bake again next week or should I freeze a cup for baking? If I do freeze a cup, do I have to do anything to make it usable? Just thaw and use? TIA!
