Are Psychics Real
Sylvia Browne, John Edwards and James Van Praggh are well-known psychics, but are these people real psychics? Do some people really have psychic powers?
Although I love to watch Sylvia Browne, John Edwards and James Von Praugh on talk shows, and I've even read some of their books, I'm a skeptic. Maybe they do have some psychic abilities, but if so, they've greatly embellished them in my opinion. My interest in the three is pure entertainment. They are entertainers and make millions of dollars off of entertaining people with their special abilities. I put them in the same rank as TV wrestling. They are so obviously fake that they're fun to watch. But this article isn't about psychic entertainers. It's about legitimate psychics. Although I'm a skeptic, I'm also a believer. I believe psychics are real, because I've had some pretty remarkable psychic experiences of my own..
Rhine Research Center
People working and volunteering at the Rhine Research Center in Durham, North Carolina also believe psychics are real. The Rhine Center is housed on the campus of Duke University. The founders were Joseph B. and Louisa Rhine. The Rhines began researching what was known, at the time, as psychical research, the field of investigation into psychic phenomena. The main area of investigation involved working with mediums in the search for evidence of an afterlife. The year was 1927 and Duke University was newly founded. J. B. Rhine coined the term extra sensory perception (ESP) which referred to those people with telepathic and clairvoyant abilities. Rhine studied ESP using specially designed cards and Duke University student volunteers. He also studied psychokinesis (PK) using dice machines. PK refers to the ability to move objects by mental intention alone.
A New Science
In 1935 a special unit called the Duke Parapsychology Laboratory was established--as a result of the Rhine's findings--for studying a new science, called parapsychology. In 1937 the Journal of Parapsychology was published as an independent peer-reviewed professional journal to report on the findings of the Duke research and findings of other laboratories from around the world.
The Rhine Research Center Today
The Rhine Center continues its research today into many paranormal areas such as hauntings, near death experiences and precognition. They offer online classes for interested people around the world. At their center, they hold conferences and workshops year round. On their website, they welcome visitors to share their own paranormal experiences. The greatest number of reported events in the history of the center came from people having precognitive thoughts and dreams about 9/11.
My Own Psychic Experience
As I said earlier in the article, I've had my own psychic experiences that have made me a believer. Many of them have been benign, but at least five have been quite remarkable. Here's an example of two of them:
One morning, when my youngest son was nine years old, the family was getting ready for work and school. Our black and white cocker spaniel, Checkers, got out of the yard and was running around out front. I told Aaron to go get him. Aaron was chasing him out front when Checkers ran up the side street which was like a two lane country road where cars drove very fast. I'm yelling, "Get Checkers, Aaron!" He got Checkers, but then I thought, "I shouldn't have been yelling at him to get Checkers on that busy road. He could have been hit by a car." Then I thought to myself, "Oh, I hope that isn't a premonition." The kids left for school and I left for work.
At the time I was an instructional aide at a special education school. I worked with secondary autistic students. They rode the bus to school, and I drove to their group home everyday and rode the bus with them because of their violent behaviors.
I got into my car to drive to work after the incident with Checkers, wondering if I just had a psychic premonition. I turned into the neighborhood and then made a turn on the street that led to the group home. There in the middle of the road was something covered with a white sheet. The police were there. Under the white sheet was a nine year old boy.
A big four wheeler was driving down the street, and the boy decided to hitch a ride on the bumper of the truck. He fell off and rolled under the wheels.
Another Psychic Incident
It was the last day of the school year, and I was standing at the bus stop in front of our house with my three children. My oldest was in 6th grade. A girl that I had never seen before came walking up the street and stopped to wait. She was also in 6th grade. This street is two lanes and though well traveled, it didn't have a steady flow of traffic. The homes in the area are all horse property. It's in L.A. yet it's kind of a country area. I started talking to the girl and asked her who she was and where she lived. My son knew her. I found myself thinking: "She seems like a nice girl a bit shy maybe. I don't know if I would want her walking along this road alone if she were my daughter. She strikes me as someone who could be easily victimized. If somebody tried to force her in a car she probably wouldn't scream or put up a fight." My next thought was, "Oh God! I hope this isn't a premonition."
The summer passed and the next school year started in September. My son and the girl started middle school and the bus stop was on the corner across the street. There was an undeveloped field with oak trees. It was either the first or second week of school. My son went out to catch the bus and thought it was strange that the girl wasn't there, because she always got there before he did.
I'm sure you know where this is going. It turned out a man stopped and forced her in his car. He took her to a house quite a long distance from where he picked her up and molested her. He dropped her off at school after that.
Psychics are Real
I have to say psychics are real, because of my own experiences; without them I probably wouldn't believe. It's something you have to experience for yourself. I must add that this isn't something I control. I couldn't walk up to you and spout off about all of the dead relatives trying to reach you like the psychic entertainers. If you would like to read an interesting book about a real psychic who also happens to be a psychiatrist, read Second Sight by Judith Orloff.
