Black and White Christmas

by dustytoes

Forget the reds and greens, many folks want simple black and white for the Christmas holiday cards and home decorations.

Traditional Christmas holiday colors of red and green are still very popular, but people who stray from tradition may also choose purple, pink and blue. Then there are the few who go the route of black and white.

I doubt that most of us consider black as a festive holiday color but the trend towards a simple lifestyle has brought black and white into popularity and it has always stood for elegance.

Christmas Party Invitations in Beautiful Black and White

Find this one at Zazzle.

This is a lovely and elegant Christmas invitation with a tree made of swirling white designs.  The twinkling background holds white text for you to personalize with the party information.

I would choose one of Zazzle's metallic paper types, such as the metallic ice, which would give it a slight shimmery look.  What a gorgeous way to invite guests to a holiday party.

Prompted to Create in Black and White

Black and white photography is always popular, so take it one step further.

Up until a few years ago, I honestly never thought much about creating Christmas cards and ornaments in black for the holidays.  At my Zazzle stores I have occasionally offered black and white photographs and images that did sell, so I thought maybe black and white holiday products could be popular also.

Many people prefer black and white portrait photography over color.  I think those photos look just as nice, if not nicer in some cases, when added to photo cards and ornaments.  But I was taking a chance when I made products that were themselves all black and white.  Would they sell?  Yes, I am happy to say, they certainly do!

Begin With a Black or White Pre-Lit Christmas Tree

This type of tree is easy to set up and the lights are already there!

I bought a small, artificial, pre-lit tree a few years ago and I love it.  I just bring it up from the basement and plug it in.  The tiny lights look very pretty and usually extras are included for when you inevitably have one burn out.

The white tree below gets five stars from three purchasers who claim that it was simple to assemble.  It comes with 500 clear lights and the branches fold up for storage.  According to the description at Amazon, a free holiday CD is included.

The black tree comes with 400 lights, but NOT the blue ornaments you see hanging on it.  Imagine it with crystal or white decorations for a stunning home centerpiece.  At six and half feet high, it comes in three sections which will make it very easy to put together.

More Ideas For Decorating in Black and White

Whether you choose a traditional or colored tree the decorations are the fun part.

From beaded garland to chalk drawings done by the kids, there are many ways to decorate your home in non-colors.

  • Add some silver or crystal ornaments in place of all white.
  • Include bits of another color such as red or blue.
  • Wrap all your gifts in paper tied with black and white ribbon.
  • Put black chalkboards to use - small ones can hang on the tree, and larger boards can hold the Christmas menu.
  • Buy inexpensive (or expensive!) black and white dinnerware in a holiday theme, or not.
  • An animal themed tree would give you lots of options (think zebras, bears, otters, dogs and cats).
  • Switch out your everyday lampshades for black or white.

Greetings From the Tropics!

Everywhere there are people who love the look of black and white.

This simple, photo Christmas card has a big, white starfish and a pretty tree ornament.  It is a traditional 4x8 inches in size and comes with white envelopes.

The text is simply a wish for "Happy Holidays" and a custom signature template has been added.

The family photo could be in color or black and white, as you wish.
