Blooming Onion Appetizer Recipe

by Margielynn

A blooming onion is like onion rings but in one big bloom! It makes and awesome display for an appetizer! You can serve with ranch dip or any dip you like!

The blooming onion needs an hour to chill but so worth the wait. Serve with ranch dip or whatever you like, I like ketchup with mine, I know weird! Try it you might like it. Just pulled the petals off of the blooming onion and get to dipping!

If you are looking for easy they sell different blooming onion maker which might make it easier but a knife works quite well too.

I have just recently bought an air-fryer and perfecting a blooming onion air-fried. Who doesn't need to save all the calories that they can! Most foodies love kitchen gadgets and the air-fryer is really neat.

Hope you enjoy this scrumptious awesome blooming onion appetizer!

  3. Cut each quarter vertically into thirds.
  4. Put the onion in a pan of boiling water with the cut side down for 3 minutes.
  5. Remove the onion and place in a bowl of ice water for 5 minutes; drain.
  6. Put the flour in a large plastic bag.
  7. Add the onion and shake gently to coat.
  8. Remover the onion and dip into the egg.
  9. Add the cracker crumbs to a plastic bag.
  10. Add the onion and shake to coat.
  11. Remove the onion and chill for one hour.
  12. Fry the onion in 3 or 4 inches of Canola oil at about 375 degree for 5 to 7 minutes, or until golden brown.
  13. Drain the onion on paper towels.
  14. Sprinkle with salt.

 Makes 2 servings.

Tips From Margielynn

Use a very large onion or it will just serve one person.

If you like you can replace the cracker crumbs after dipping in the egg mixture for flour or Planko crumbs.

Be gentle when dipping and coating the blooming onion, it is delicate and could fall apart on you!

I do not think the type of onion would matter, but personally I like the sweeter onions I think they are 1015 onions from Texas! I like to drink iced tea or soda!

Margielynn, Ketchup sounds most non-weirdly perfect to me. What do you like to drink with the blooming onions? Does it matter what kind of onion you use?
