Brave (2012): A Disney Pixar Movie

by emeraldmile

Brave (2012) is a Disney Pixar movie featuring a female character lead - Princess Merida. Merida is the Princess who would rather be an archer.

Expected release date for Brave: June 22, 2012.

Brave (2012), a Disney Pixar animated movie, story centers around Merida (voiced by Kelly Macdonald), the daughter of a Scottish King and Queen who would rather not be a Princess, at least not in the coventional sense of the word. Brave's central protagonist Merida is a fiesty red haired archer who is surrounded by the traditions of a Scottish Kingdom that she is expected to uphold.

When Merida breaks with tradition in the new film Brave she unintentionally unleashes peril in her father's kingdom. It becomes Princess Merida's responsibility, the purpose of her quest, to return peace to her father's Kingdom.

Disney Pixar's Brave Questions Fate

Princess Merida seeks freedom

I am excited by the upcoming 2012 movie Brave because it is the first film Pixar has done with a central female character.  The early trailers ominous imagery is masterful and sets the stage for a animated tale of a Kingdon in the Highlands of Scottland.  The combination of scenery, lore, a theme of freedom is sure to capture the hearts of movie goers everywhere.

My Early Brave Movie Thoughts

What do you think?

From the Disney Pixar Brave trailer releases it looks like this film will delve in to Scottish lore and common themes of the generation gap, questions of individuality, and gender roles. These themes will be used to make the young audience identify with this ancient, yet modern day Princess.

From the early news and trailers I suspect that Merida will be more akin to Disney Princesses like Mulan.  It looks like some of the same subjects will be dealt with as Disney's Mulan.

It appears as if Merida will have siblings which is not usually the norm with Princesses; though, Ariel had six sisters in the Little Mermaid, and Cinderella had wicked step-sisters.  I wonder if more attention will be paid to the sibling relationship in this film.  I suppose we will have to wait until June 22, 2011 to see how they handle the sibling relationship.
