If you’re going on a fishing vacation to the Great Lakes in either the United States or Canada, you have a vast area to choose from. There are six great lakes and they comprise Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie, Saint Claire, and Lake Ontario. With the exception of Lake Michigan which lies entirely inside the United States, the other four are in both Canada and America. They are all interconnected with each other. The state of Michigan is surrounded by Lakes Huron, Erie, Superior, and Michigan.

Different Types of Fish at the Great Lakes
There are about two hundred different types of fish in the Great Lakes, the largest of which are the sturgeon. The type and size of the fish are affected by the temperature and depth of the lakes, so that Lake Erie has the greatest variety in types of fish as it is warm and shallow, while Lake Superior has fewer types than any of the other lakes as it is cold and deep. Many of the fish are seeded especially for fisherman.
If you like lake trout, salmon, walleye, perch, white fish, smallmouth bass, steelhead and brown trout, these are all fish that can commonly be caught on your fishing trip. However, fish tend to be unique to particular lakes so bear in mind the following when selection which great lake to select when going on your fishing vacation.
Lake Superior, which is the largest lake, has rainbow smelt, lake whitefish, lake herring, and yellow perch. Lake Erie is the home of yellow perch salmon and walleye. Incidentally, Lake Michigan also supports the same type of fish that are caught at Lake Erie. Lake Huron is known for its superb whitefish. Fisherman have tended to avoid Lake Ontario as the lake is polluted and this affects the safety of eating the fish after the catch. What's a fishing holiday without a fish barbecue at the end of the day?
Best Fishing Tackle for your Fishing Vacation at the Great Lakes
Of course, different fish require different fishing tackle. So, if you're going fishing for salmon or trout, you're going to be using different tackle to what you would be using if you were fishing for yellow perch. With this in mind, rather than go over the many options available, I'm providing some links for you to look at. Basspro gives you an enormous selection ranging from fishing rods and fishing reels through fishing line, hooks, sinkers, salmon and trolling accessories to ice fishing equipment if you decide to visit one of the Canadian Great Lakes in winter.
I was particularly impressed by their Walleye top sellers. I also thought that the Extreme Qualifier 370 Camo Tackle Bag System could prove to be extremely useful especially for an experienced fisherman on an extended fishing vacation.
Cabela's also has a very strong range of fishing tackle. I loved what they had to offer in the popular multi-bait fishing system. I mean, why catch one lone fish when you can have five for the same degree of effort? They also have a good line in umbrella rigs.
A Little Information about the Great Lakes
Fresh Water for Cities
Because lakes like these provide fresh water, it is not surprising that they often have cities built alongside them, and are responsible for lush vegetation and brimming farmlands. They also act as a draw to tourists, and are the largest fresh water supply in the world.
How the Great Lakes were Formed
These lakes were formed when the sea receded from the area and the small organisms that lived at the bottom of the sea died and formed a thick floor of limestone. Then an ice age came and went, and eventually the melting snows of the last ice age began to fill the area where the sea had once been. Rivers also formed between the lakes, thus connecting them, for example, the Saint Mary's River links Lake Superior to Lake Huron. The Niagara Falls are part of the Niagara River which connects Lake Erie with Lake Ontario. The rivers between these lakes allow traffic to ferry cargo as well as providing a method of transport for tourists and businessmen.
Fish and Plants in the Great Lakes
Fresh water lakes have different fish and plants to those that live under the sea. Some of the plants that live in these lakes include bladderwort, coontail, muskgrass, waterweed, pondweed, and wild celery. The pondweed provides food for some of the birdlife that lives on the lake, including coots and mallard ducks. Like all fresh water lakes, the area is a feeding ground for many different types of insects. These include water beetles, scorpions, and mayflies which are eaten by the fish.

The list of cities that are alongside these lakes are numerous, with a total of eighty nine cities. There are fourteen cities alongside Lake Erie, of which Buffalo , Cleveland, Erie, and Toledo are the largest. Lake Huron boasts fourteen cities as well, while Lake Superior has seven cities, of which Thunder Bay in Ontario, Canada is the most well known. Lake Ontario has eleven cities, of which two are in New York and the rest are in Ontario. Lake Michigan has the largest number of cities and towns built alongside of her. These number forty three and cover the states of Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Illinois. The larger cities for this lake include Chicago and Milwaukee.
