Chatter away, friends!

Vampires are pets?!?

Is it just me, or do other people find it slightly disturbing that there seems to be a rising number of vampire related pieces popping up under "pets and animals"?

There are also sasquatch, unicorns, dragons, zombies and the Loch Ness monster.  It's because 'Legendary Creatures' is a sub-category in there.   It's pinging off the 'animals' part rather than the 'pets'.

I do feel a little responsible for the vampire infestation though. And by 'a little', I mean 'completely and utterly'.  Sorry about that!

I'd be fine if 'Legendary Creatures' migrated to 'Paranormal' or something.  It does look a bit weird finding vampires next to cats and degus.

Hi Jo

I am not complaining about it by any means! It just seems like a strange subcategory. Good articles, BTW :)

I've wondered about that. Vampires are ex-humans, not animals.

Chef! I nearly splurfed my Coke all over my keyboard!

Keyboards and Coke don't mix - WordChazer's First Rule of Computer Use.

Sounds like a good idea to migrate those vampires, stat. We don't want them taking on the degus - could get messy.

Described by one of my clients as 'a literary grammarian', writing, researching and reading are requirements for sanity, at least this side of the keyboard.

@ TheWritersDog   No, you're all good!  I was thinking the same thing, and I'm the one doing it.  With a little bit of complicity from Wisefool.

@ Catana  The more I'm looking into it, the more dodgy any overall category would be.  Vampires could just as easily be under 'psychology' and 'social scares', or 'popular culture', or 'literature', or 'movies'.  There's so much going on there, which is why it all has me so fascinated at the moment.

@  ChefKeem  LOL   Most people hold out for chocolate!   *goes to see*   Thank you for the new category.  I can think of a dozen articles immediately which would fit perfectly in there.  The Shadow People, Mothman etc.   But...

*cringes*

As it's now a third level category, you don't get all of the sub-categories.   Legendary Creatures over in the Pets and Animals category has vampires, zombies, unicorns, Bigfoot, Pixies, Dragons, Loch Ness Monster etc, all in their own wrapper.

Never satisfied, are we? :p    Let me muse on it.  There's always a solution.

@ WordChazer  Help me find a good place for them then!  The Degus are relying on you!   Here's the category at the moment:  Legendary Creatures.

Don't they all fit under the new cat string, Jo?

Most people will find your articles based on their titles, anyway.

If all got moved to Paranormal, then we'd we swapping this:

for a generic one, which amalgamated all under a single heading.  We already get that, when we click the top level 'legendary creatures' in 'pets and animals'.   Why would I (or you!) want Bigfoot in a generic sub-category, when there's a Bigfoot one?  Ditto everything else on the list.

I have been musing on this though.   How about we have a brand new top level category?   It could be called something like 'Mysteries and Spirituality' or 'Religion and Mythology'.

Then nick all of the religious and paranormal sub-categories from 'Culture & Society', along with the legends and folklore ones there.   Add in the entire 'legendary creatures' sub-category from 'Pets and Animals' and let them all live together there.

I'd also include Atheism, because that wouldn't even be a thing, if there wasn't Theism to act as the antonym.

Culture and Society is a massive category anyway, so I doubt it would miss those sub-categories too much.

These are the ones I'd move over into the new category:

I'd also make a new sub-category (in the new category) called Divination, and move Tarot Cards and Numerology from 'legends and folklore', plus Astrology from 'Paranormal' into that.   UFOs could possibly be a 2nd level title too.  That's currently in paranormal.

If you'd be up for this (and the rest of Wizzley finds the idea acceptable), I could write it all out a little more clearly!

Oh boy. Potential cans of worms there. I can already hear people screaming about religion being included with mythology. Though I’d certainly go along with it, on some levels.

And atheism isn’t an antonym. The word depends on the existence of theism, but the state of being an atheist doesn’t.

Plus, too much shifting around is going to play hell with articles that already exist.

Surely the only people who would scream at such a grouping are those who misunderstand both religion and mythology.  Then it's up to us to write loads of lovely articles to correct such misapprehensions.

The articles would all transfer en masse, within the categories and sub-categories to which they were originally assigned.   They would remain exactly where their authors placed them.
