How to Make an Easy Origami Cupcake

by Marie

Kids and adults can craft and make up a sweet and cute easy origami cupcake design in minutes by using some very simple paper folds. This tutorial explains everything step by step.

Discover how you can create a really easy flat cupcake design with some simple folds made in a sheet of square craft or origami paper. It's so easy that both kids and adults are able to do this. Once you've completed this fast design, you can pop it on the front of a greeting card that you want to make, use it as a cute little gift tag, a bookmark or perhaps make some sweet hanging ornament by punching a hole at the top and popping some twine, ribbon or cord through.

Because this is nice and simple, it is an ideal project for those who are new to origami and those who need quick items that can be created. With some adult guidance, children from as young as 6 may be able to do this as well and older kids might even be able to follow the directions themselves. Have fun making your sweet little paper confections.

Easy Cupcake Paper Folding Instructions and Photos

Starting point for the sheet of square paper
Step 1
Folding the square paper into a half triangle
Step 2

Step 1: You need to use a square sheet of Origami paper (often 6 x 6 inches in size) or a thin paper which is colored or patterned on only one side. Place the colored side of the paper so that it is facing down on the work-surface in front of you and rotate it so it is shaped like a diamond as shown in the image above.

Step 2: Take hold of the bottom corner of your paper and pull it right up to meet the top corner. Line up the side edges and make a fold. Your paper is now folded in half and should look like a triangle.

Step 4

Step 3: Pull back the very top corner of your triangle, making sure that you only grab hold of the top layer of paper. Pull the top corner down, slightly past the middle and make a fold which looks like a downward facing triangle. You're now going to fold this little triangle portion to make a fancy edging for your cupcake design.

Step 4: Take hold of the bottom tip of the triangle you just folded and bring the tip of it over the folded line by a good finger width. Fold or make your crease. You might want to click on the relevant image to see this in action because it's easier to view it being done than explain.

Step 6

Step 5: Get hold of the top tip of paper you just folded (it's the little pink triangle shown in step 4) and fold that back down to make a fancy edging. You've now folded the front of your cupcake.

Step 6: Turn or flip your whole piece of paper over now to the back of your design. The back will look just like a folded triangle. Take hold of the very top tip of the triangle ensuring you only get hold of the top layer of paper and pull this down to make a small, downward facing triangular fold - you want to make a fold just a little way above the fold line on the front of your cupcake.

Step 8

Step 7: Take hold of the bottom tip of the triangle that you just folded and pull it so the tip just extends a little over the folded edge as shown in the image for step 7. Now make your crease.

Step 8: With the small tip of triangular paper right at the very top of your origami cupcake design (shown in pink on the image for step 7) fold it over to the front. So just push it forward and down while holding your design up from the worksurface.

Step 10

Step 9: Take hold of the tip on the far right at the back of your cupcake and pull it up and across to the left so the edge sits just a small way under but level with the folding you've made at the top. Refer to the Step 9 image for accurate positioning of the fold. This shapes the side of the cupcake.

Step 10: Repeat this same action over on the left side of your piece of origami. Take hold of the tip on the far left and pull it up and across to the right so the edge sits flush with the top edge of the part you folded in step 9. When both sides have been folded they make the actual cupcake shape. Turn it over to the front to see your finished design.

There are lots of cute things you can use with your origami sheets; make cupcakes for cards, scrapbooks, little notes for friends and family and as tags for gifts. Check out the handmade greetings card I made using this cute design below.
