How to Make Perler Bead Earrings Tutorial

by Marie

Learn how to make fun, novelty earrings from fused Perler or Hama beads with this step by step photo tutorial. A cute custom jewelry craft for older kids and adults to enjoy.

Perler, Hama and other varieties of fused bead crafts make an ideal choice for creating your own fun and novelty pieces of custom jewelry up very quickly from scratch. The bonus is that you get to design whatever you want with these and then transform them into wearable jewelry that you can enjoy. Small dangle earrings make for a fast crafty project that you can make up.

If you've worked with fused beads before, you'll know that you need to bond the plastic pieces together by heating them up with an iron so that the beads stick firmly to each other and create a strong bond. Smaller designs and motifs normally work best for jewelry and I made some here using a small skull pattern. You could try little shapes like hearts, flowers or fun items like fruit.

When you start making your own earring designs, you can sell the finished items locally, online with venues such as Etsy or eBay and also give these fun items away as handmade gifts too. They are fast to make and take around 5-10 minutes to transform into jewelry once you have your completed Perler or Hama bead design made.

What you need to make earrings from perler bead projects

Step 1: This image shows all the equipment that you really need in order to complete this easy craft project: some blank earring hooks, open jump rings, a pair of jewelry pliers and your completed Perler or Hama design.

Opening up a jump ring to use in making your own jewelry

Step 2: Partially open up one of the jump rings. Open jump rings are small metal circles which have an opening or a break in them - designed so that they can be pulled apart. Grasp a jump ring with the pliers on one side and pull at the other side of the ring so that you widen up the opening or gap. You might need to use some sturdy tweezers in order to carry out this task depending on just how pliable the metal is.

Step 3: Push the partially opened jump ring through the bottom hole of a blank earring hook.

Step 4: Next slide one end of the jump ring with the earring hook attached through a hole near the top of your completed Perler bead design. You need a hole at the top and preferably in the middle of the design so that the earring hangs down properly when worn.

If the hole in the fused bead design is closed over too much from when it was ironed then you need to open it up or expand it by inserting something through with a very fine point which will then make it wide enough for the jump ring to pass through.

Step 5: Close up the jump ring with the pliers to finish attaching the design to the blank earring hook.

Step 6: You may need to twist the ends of the earring hook to ensure that the fused bead design hangs just the way you want it to while worn from your ears. Looks like you are an expert on bead crafts. The bead ear-rings look cool. My sister too is a crafts person, last year she made beautiful bracelet and necklaces with small beads. It requires a lot of patience and dedication but the end product is magnificent.
