Mary's Boy Child - Christmas Classics

by uninvitedwriter

We only hear Christmas carols being for approximately two months, many feel that is too long as it it. Mary's Boy Child always seems to make the favorites lists.

Most us like Christmas music, but we only want to hear them for two months out of the year (some even less). I only really like hearing them in December. But in December I go Christmas carol crazy! I find every Christmas song I can and load them into my iTunes and add them to my iPod. I have over 7 hours of Christmas music on my iPod currently. I usually buy one Christmas CD every year.

Some people find it strange that I love Christmas carols so much since I am not a believer in God. When I was a child I went to church, but I went for the music, nothing else at church ever touched me but the music. My favorite Christmas carol as a child was Away in a Manger, now it is O Holy Night. And now this song, which is also a religious one.

I do like some of the poppier Christmas songs such as Santa Claus is Coming to Town (as sung by Bruce Springsteen) but my favorites are all religious. I was drawn to Mary's Boy Child because it was different than the others.

Mary's Boy Child was written by Jester Hairston; it is also known as Mary's Little Boy Child. It was recorded by Harry Belafonte that same year with a decidedly Caribbean feel to it. It reached #1 on the UK music charts in 1957.

The song is one of the most covered of all Christmas carols. It has been recorded by everyone from Andy Williams to Boney M to The Little River Band. I have included those versions down below and several others that I really enjoy listening to.

Harry Belafonte

This was the original version of the song, recorded in 1956 (the year I was born). I love the Caribbean feel and it's a really uplifting song.

Boney M

This was my favorite version of this song for the longest time. It was recorded by Boney M in 1981. I loved the disco beat of the song. I discovered this band because of the song Rasputin. The band is not knows for much more than those two songs. But they certainly knocked this one out of the park.

Andy Wiliams

Sadly, Andy Williams is no longer with us. To me, he was Christmas and I grew up watching his Christmas specials on TV. He felt like one of the family. He recorded this version in 1965.

Tom Jones

Best known for his sexy moves, Tom Jones does an excellent version of this song. He recorded the song in 1993.

Mahalia Jackson

I hadn't heard this version until I started researching for this article. It brings a whole new feel to the song. It was also recorded in 1956 and is titled Mary's Little Boy Chile. She was such an amazing gospel singer and makes this song her own.

Little River Band

The Little River Band recorded this version in 2007. It appeared on their Christmas album, "We Call it Christmas."

The Andy Williams Christmas Album

Oh, to hear Mahalia Jackson sing that was was amazing. Her voice was so powerful yet clear and lilting. That song has brought joy into my heart this morning. Thank you for these many versions. Your hard work will bring pleasure to many others. As you know I do believe in God and follow His son Jesus as my example of love, patience, kindness and in all other ways. So this song touches me spiritually as well as emotionally. Thanks again for sharing this with us. I am playing Mahalia again!
