Nissan LEAF® Electric Cars Are Low on Noise
Nissan LEAF® electric cars are friendly to environmental and public health even though they contribute more to noise pollution than their original design intends, according to The Electric Car Guide: Nissan LEAF®.
Noise pollution belongs on the list of environmental and public health contaminants along with air, land and water pollution since noise is aging, disruptive and stressful. Drivers, passengers and pedestrians who criticize conventional vehicles for moving parts, revved engines, road vibrations and wind drag call electric cars silent killers that move soundlessly. Pressure applied to and removed from the pedal drive the Nissan LEAF® into a silent acceleration from, or a soundless deceleration to, a standstill within seconds.
Drivers expect silent starts and soundless stops from the Nissan LEAF® even though some legislation requires electric cars to make contributions, albeit minimalist, to noise pollution.

Me too, I'm happy to find noise pollution addressed.
But, like you say so well about the warning signs that car noises can make to indicate that something's wrong, it's a balancing act between minimizing sound pollution and noting what lowest possible level permits comfortable safety for those inside quiet vehicles and safe comfort for those outside as cyclists, other drivers and pedestrians.
Noise pollution is an important issue and it's great to be finally addressed. On the other hand we will need to adapt to vehicles with low noise because we are already used to their sound as one of warning signs.

Yes, family-sized electric cars are near-noiseless, non-polluting and small.
From my experience, electric cars do not encounter what fossil-fueled counterparts face in terms of parking spaces, which thus far leave the former's driver with room to spare. It means that electric-car drivers have to worry less about other drivers and passengers who open their doors into the sides of adjacent-parked cars.
Hi DerdriuMarriner - The Nissan Leaf looks like a small car. Perhaps electric cars are small, less noisy and less polluting. I liked that it is not a big car. If one has a small family, small car it is for the family to invest in.
frankbeswick, Thank you for sharing your experiences with and insights into silence and traffic noise. The latter unfortunately is increasing here. But so far I relish still being able to hear, daily, bluebirds, mourning doves, ovenbirds, red-winged blackbirds, robins and tufted titmice and nightly owls and warblers as well as frogs and toads. Me too, it works for many reasons, among them being religious and spiritual.
Talking of silence or lack of it. I spent two years in college in London, and what I hated about the place was the constant traffic noise. Then I moved on to the North West of Ireland, where the silence was punctuated only by wind and rain, animal cries and the occasional car. I found myself able to walk and think about religious questions unhampered by noise. Delightful!

Michael Boxwell of the UK wrote a helpful book on how electricity production can, or not, be clean depending upon what produces it.
We too often forget the importance of silence (or just not too much noise) for our health. Electric cars are a big step further in this area. i just wish the production of electricity would be cleaner.

sandyspider, It's great that consumers, manufacturers and regulators were able to get together to keep Nissan LEAF quiet inside and just noisy enough outside for their presence to be detected by bikers, drivers and pedestrians caught up with less quiet models.
