Nostalgic Halloween candy

by tealmermaid

Take a trip down memory lane with these nostalgic Halloween candies.

Think back to childhood about those special Halloween candies you waited to receive each year. The nostalgia factor is huge when it comes to treats such as candy corn, or new favourites like the Halloween Peeps -- pumpkins! bats! ghosts! in addition to new flavour twists on the standard Peeps chick -- which have been produced the last few years. If you had a choice, which types of candy would fill your personal treat bag?

Mellowcreme candy corn

The process for making candy corn was developed in the 1880s by George Renninger of the Wunderlee Candy Co. It involves combining honey, corn syrup, food colouring, and sugar to produce a syrup called mellowcreme. After colouring, the resulting syrup is formed into small corn kernel-shaped candies. These candies are said to taste like marshmallow, hence the "mellowcreme" label. The distinctive tri-colour kernels are a popular Halloween treat for trick or treat bags.

Over the last few years, the availability of candy corn has widened. It is now also available for Valentine's Day (pink and red), Easter (pastel colours), Thanksgiving (yellow and brown), and Christmas (red and green).

October 30th is Candy Corn Day!

Mellowcreme candy pumpkins

Candy pumpkins are made by the same process that results in candy corn. After colouring, the resulting syrup is formed into small pumpkin-shaped candies. The most popular candy pumpkins are produced by Brach's, but there are off-brands available in certain locations as well. These popular Halloween treats are only available during the Halloween season. They are typically used to fill trick or treat bags as well as their common usage as cupcake nonpareils. Unlike candy corn, you will not see these mellowcreme pumpkins in the off-season.
