Photography For Children

by Jersey1

Introducing your child to the world of digital cameras and photography is a wonderful hobby and educational. A productive life long tool.

Why Photography? Let me tell you a true story that should speak for itself.I have a 11 year old nephew who is a good kid but at that age where we have to keep him in check. Smart on the computer and adept, somewhat addicted, at video games. Outdoors didnt play much into his life. Well this bothered me to some extent as the balance was not there. Too much priority to non productive video games.Well one day he was at my home and I was showing him the work of myself and other contributors to various agencies that pay for my photos. Showed him how to use my camera a bit and how post processing works and can be fun using the special effects. "If it aint fun a kid wont do it". He had a ball! Sometimes we as adults take the fun out of stuff and take things too serious. He was so excited he could not stop talking about photography to anyone with a ear.Well.....I bought him his first Point and Shoot! Now we cant keep him indoors and the video games are collecting dust! He dabbles in post processing, I downloaded him Gimp for free, and what is really facinating to me is seeing the world through a childs eye. Things we as adults maybe have lost sight of.To make this story short by exposing him to basic photography and getting him his own camera he found a new productive, educational and safe hobby! His friends all want cameras now, unlike some kids who want guns and knives. They want to start a camera club, not a gang. And they gets tons of exercise by being outdoors all the time snapping away! It is mentally stimulating beyond what I can explain here.So if anyone is hesitant about getting a child a camera and introducing them to photography...dont wait as the benefits we may not see are great.

Point and Shoot Digital Cameras

Great place to start!

What is Point and Shoot? Simply put? A camera that when set to automatic makes all the perfect settings for the photographer. It will focus, set the aperture, speed and exposure settings required for the perfect basic shot. They will even set off the flash where needed! This feature is important because it will produce a great photo thus avoiding disappointment to the new "Kidographer". We want to encourage not discourage the child.

Where do the Pictures Go?

Thousands of Photos and no Film!

Memory Cards! All cameras come with memory cards that store your photos until you transfer them to your computer or other storage device. These cards are removable and come in various Megabytes to Gigabytes. The larger the memory of this card the more photos one can store. They are eraseable and reuseable and inexpensive. You manual will tell you what type of memory card to use as there are a few formats. Once installed in the camera you have two options to tranfer the photo to the computer. One is direct transfer via included camera to USB port cable or you can remove the Memory Card and slip it into the memory card slot on the computer. I prefer the cable so I never have to remove the card. Transfer is a breeze and automated once the included software is installed on your computer. In minutes your child and you will be viewing the photos! You can even E-Mail them to friends and family! Print them and hang them on your walls!

Software

Bonus

Each camera comes with computer software that should be installed. This software automates the entire tranfer of photos from the camera to the computer. It is simple and as a bonus most include alot of fun programs that allow the user to manipulate the photos from everything from size to special fun effects. Simplified printing to morphing in some cases. The imagination is unlimited so use this software! This is a wonderful time for both parents and children to have fun together,

Project.....Fund Raiser

For your School,Charity,Organization or Child

Photography is a proven Fund Raiser. Many Fund Raisers are using the photos our children are taking to raise funds for causes to help those in need. For example your child goes out and photographs, their interest, say animals. The photos are printed out on the home printer. Then the photos are displayed at the Fund Raiser site be it school or other location and either a price is set or the photo is up for bid with a minimum starting price. The child will recieve either half the sale price or a set figure to cover the printing expenses. Photographs children and teens have taken are a very big seller at these events!

Scrapbook Memories

Your gonna wish you did this!

Years down the road your going to wish you had started a Scrapbook of your childs early photography years if you dont start a Scrapbook of their work. Since they were born you have compiled tons of photos you took of them to be cherished and remembered years from now. Why not give them the unique opportunity to create their own with photos they have taken from the start! Imagine someday their own children will see these photos and you just may be the star! And as a bonus this is a family project. What can be better?
