Review of Prego Florentine Spinach & Cheese Pasta Sauce

by StevenHelmer

My wife purchased this the other day when it was on sale. What did we think of it?

Product Description: Marinara pasta sauce from the Prego brand that contains a mix of spinach, onion and Parmesan cheese along with Italian seasonings. My wife picked up a jar of this sauce at one of our local grocery stores a short while ago when she found it on sale for around $2.50. We decided to use it last night, when we made baked stuffed pasta shells for dinner.

Review

Prego SauceI don’t normally buy the Prego brand unless I’m tight on money and it happens to be on sale. However, it is a brand my wife does enjoy and, when she does the shopping, chances are she is going to bring home a jar of it.

This was the case a few days ago when she was at the store and came across the Prego Florentine Spinach & Cheese pasta sauce. It was something we hadn’t tried before and, knowing we both enjoy spinach, she decided to pick it up.

Due to a variety of reasons, we didn’t get a chance to use this sauce until last night, when we decided to make some stuffed pasta shells we had in our freezer and needed a marinara sauce to bake them in. After trying the sauce, I have to admit it was better than I was expecting it to be.

One thing I found I liked about this particular sauce right away was the thickness. A lot of other jarred sauces promise to have vegetables in them and really don’t deliver. This one did. I could see the big chunks of spinach when I poured the sauce out of the jar and, even without those chunks, the sauce was thicker than most of the other brands we purchase. This was somewhat important too considering I was trying to bake the pasta in the sauce and only used the one jar.

As far as seasonings go, I did think this sauce was a little on the rich side for me and, because of that, did limit myself. However, while it was a bit too rich for what we were eating last night, I do think the bold flavor would be a good fit for some other dishes we occasionally prepare. And, my wife (who likes bold sauces in general) was more than happy to finish up the sauce I didn’t want to use.

Final Opinion

As I said before, this has a rich, bold flavor that may not work with some dinners (or personal tastes). However, overall, I thought it was a unique sauce that I do feel I would purchase again and do recommend taking the time to try it.

I'll see if we have Prego sauce here. I've tried several pasta sauces and haven't been happy with any of them. I also don't like the preservatives in tomato sauce. But I'll try Prego. They chose quite a nice Italian name for themselves.

I won't eat any store bought sauce but Prego. I Like the regular meat flavor one the best, but all I have had have been very good.
