Review of Schwan’s Pasta Shells Stuffed with Cheese

by StevenHelmer

A review of the frozen pasta product we purchased through Schwan's Home Delivery.

Product Description: Large shell-shaped pasta stuffed with ricotta, Asiago and Romano cheese and available for purchase through Schwan’s home delivery service. My wife and I purchased a package of 16 shells for around $11 a couple weeks ago and ended up making 8 of the shells as a dinner-for-two last night (baking the shells in some jarred pasta sauce we purchased at one of our local grocery stores).

Review

Schwan's PastaMonday night is ice skating night for our family and, as a result of that; we normally end up eating frozen pizza for dinner. However, I was in the mood for something different this time around and, since our daughters had eaten prior to their skating lessons, my wife and I decided to try some of the Schwan’s Pasta Shells Stuffed with Cheese we had purchased earlier this month.

This was a purchase I honestly had to be convinced about. While we haven’t had too many complaints about the food we’ve purchased through Schwan’s in the past, the price on this particular product did seem a bit high, especially since I could buy similar items at most of our grocery stores for about half as much. However, after trying the pasta, I do have to admit it was worth spending the extra money on.

There were a couple things in particular I liked about this product. The first was the size of the shells. They were actually a little larger than the shells I’m used to buying at the store and that extra size did make a pretty big difference when making the food. We were able to use only half the bag and there was enough for us to have two servings each and be full. This isn’t always the case with other products we’ve purchased.

Another thing I liked about this pasta was the cheese filling. First, there was a lot of it, much more than I was expecting based on expectations set by my experience with store brands. More importantly, the cheese had a good flavor to it. You could tell there was a mix of cheeses and they worked really well with each other. In other words, this is the type of pasta I would expect to get at a restaurant and not one I would expect to get when purchasing a frozen package.

In fact, my only real regret about this item was not thinking ahead and making the entire bag. That way, I could have had some leftovers for lunch today.

Final Opinion

Again, this is a bit more expensive than the frozen varieties you might find at your local grocery store. However, the quality does justify the extra money and it is a brand that I would recommend if you are able to splurge a bit.

StevenHelmer, Thank you for product lines, pretty pictures and practical information.
Asiago, ricotta and romano cheeses cooperate with each other in combination. So this is a product that I have on my post-Lent menu plans. It looks like there are good prices now so I'll buy now and freeze for next month.

What else would you typically serve with cheese-stuffed pasta shells?

Sometimes frozen pasta has great cheese flavor. I like to make food from scratch but I use frozen pasta now and then. What I do is add broccoli or carrots, etc. to it to make it healthier (given that it has all that cheese:).

I love Schwan's Maple Nut ice cream!! I find everything else to be high in sodium, even the frozen steaks have 580 mg. Great ice cream though!!
