  • Potatoes, as many as needed
  • Canola or olive oil
  • Kosher salt, sea salt or table salt
  • Toppings:
  • butter
  • sour cream
  • cheese
  • bacon bits
  • green onions



  1. Russet potatoes make the best-baked potato, but you can use any white potato.
  2. Make sure they are firm; their skin should be smooth and free of sprouts or green tint.
  3. Preheat the oven to a temperature of 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
  4. Wash and scrub your potatoes; remove any spots.
  5. Poke your potatoes all around with a fork, poking deeply into flesh with 6 to 12 pokes, depending on size.
  6. Use olive oil or Canola oil to coat your potatoes generously with either a cooking brush or your hands.
  7. Sprinkle kosher salt, sea salt or table salt all over the potato.
  8. Bake your potato at 400 degree F for about 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
  9. Place your baked potatoes directly on the rack in your oven. Put a cookie sheet underneath to catch any salt.
  10. Cut the baked potatoes in half lengthwise, squeeze the potatoes a bit by adding pressure at both ends. The inside of the potato will fluff up.
  11. Spread your favorite toppings in your potato.

  • The oil will keep the skin from drying out and wrinkling and it will make the skin crispy.
  • After applying oil the potato should be shiny, but not dripping wet with oil.
  • The salt rubbed on the outside of potato keeps it from drying out and adds taste to the skin and insides of the potato.
  • Poking the potatoes with a fork lets the steam escape through the holes.



  •  Do not use foil, the skin of your baked potatoes will wrinkle and be tasteless.
  • Be careful of steam when cutting potato open.
