Synopsis: Always on the lookout for a good bargain, Aunt Bee (Frances Bavier) purchases a side of beef from a discount butcher. However, even though the meat is affordable, it is also much tougher than the meat she normally buys. To make matters worse, shortly after she purchases the meat, the box freezer goes on the fritz and Bee is too embarrassed to call someone in to repair it.
The Andy Griffith Show Episode Review: "Bargain Day"
A review of the season 4 Andy Griffith Show episode that first aired in March 1964.
Funny Episode with a Great Lesson
This is actually one of my favorite episodes of this classic television series because Aunt Bee, in many ways, reminds me of my wife and me. We’re always looking to save money, especially on groceries. And, for a while, that did mean shopping for the best bargains, at least until we learned, much like Aunt Bee did, that a lower price doesn’t always equal a good bargain, especially if the bargain requires purchasing something in bulk.
What really made this episode entertaining was the way she kept trying to justify her purchase and did everything she could to prevent Andy (Andy Griffith) from discovering the purchase, even as the freezer kept killing the power in the house. Her refusal to “call the man from Mount Pilot” just added to it because it did mean the 150 pounds of beef was in danger of spoiling.
Another aspect of this episode I did enjoy was the way it showed the friendliness the citizens of Mayberry can sometimes show. This, as I’ve mentioned in other reviews, is not always the case in episodes. In fact, there have been times when Mayberry’s citizens have actually been quite cruel. So, seeing someone like the butcher, Mr. Foley (Ferguson), be so willing to help her out despite the fact she didn’t purchase the meat from him was somewhat refreshing. Of course, to be fair, I should probably deduct a few points because of the fact he obviously has a crush on her.
My only real complaint about this episode was the decision to have Gomer (Jim Nabors) try to fix the freezer. This is mostly because that scene was very predictable and it wasn’t too hard to figure out what would happen the second he touched the freezer.

This is a really good episode that is funny and teaches a very important lesson about always looking for the best price. This is an episode that is always worth taking the time to watch if you have a chance.
