Is The World Ending In 2012?

by frugalrvers

Is the world ending in 2012? You don't have to believe in Mayan predictions. Modern signs and current events on our ailing planet may signify doomsday, and that the end is near.

Do you wonder what will happen on December 21 2012? Perhaps nothing. That said, there are a lot of us ordinary people out here in the world who have an interest in apocalypse caused by man or nature, which can happen on any date. Ranging from people with a mild interest in the latest predictions, to those who cast a wary eye on current headlines for signs of the end, to the full blown doomsday preppers with homes and provisions in rebuilt missile silos - the idea of the end of days is a popular one for a large percentage of the current dwellers on the planet.

When Is The End Of The World Coming?

Doomsday Meaning To Me

I don't know when the end of the world is coming, but I have been interested in this type of thing for a long time. Anyone remember the whole Y2K fiasco? However, I ponder doomsday scenarios more from a distance than being practically involved in any way. But in 2009 when my wife Robin and I left our former life of mortgages, credit cards, and homeowner's associations behind to hit the great American road and live on a shoestring, we began to realize that if something apocalyptic was to happen, our rv lifestyle would fit right in. We are living very simply, as frugally as possible, and trying to even further minimize what we really need to live. In a way, we're all set for anything that might happen. Well, not anything - if the planet is struck by an asteroid, or the ice caps melt, or the average temperature creeps past the point of RV air-conditioning helping at all, we're as sunk as everyone else.

If I had to choose a stance, I really like Emerson's take on it all...he says every day is doomsday.

Mayan Predictions 2012 - Is It The End?

Should I Worry About Mayan Predictions For 2012?

For spectacular, eye-opening, apocalyptic end of the world predictions, 2012 is the big one. By now, everyone has heard about the possibility of the world ending in 2012, due to lots and lots of hype and publicity. But what are the actual Mayan predictions for 2012?

The answer might be surprising - there are no specific predictions about 2012 in Mayan writing or encoded in structures, except that the December 21 date is the definite end of a time cycle.

As a culture, the ancient Mayans were completely obsessed with time. And I'm not talking about deciding when it was time for lunch. They kept track of time in huge, mind-bogglingly cosmic chunks.Their specialty was interlocking cycles, each one based on a different astronomical authority.

It would be similar to us having 3 or 4 calendars that we used to keep track of the passage of time instead of just 1, and every so often events in all of the calendars would coincide. For the Mayans, and for us, apparently December 21, 2012 was an important date on the calendar, because it was a point where the end of several different cycles came together.

However, recent media reports about archaeological finds in Guatemala seemed to contradict the Mayan calendar prediction. Journalists were falling all over themselves to say that because a scribe and calendar keeper had written a column of dates on the wall of a work room that went beyond 12/21/2012, there was no way that all of those end of the world predictions could be right. After all, who in his right mind would continue a calendar past the date of his death, or the end of the world as we know it?

How Will The World End In 2012 - Potential Signs Of World Ending

This Isn't Just About Mayan Predictions For 2012...Look Around You

Unfortunately, it is very easy to look at the state of the world here in the actual year of the supposed end, and to see signs of world ending events on the way everywhere. Look at all we are experiencing in 2012...

Climate Change 2012

Scientists and politicians of every stripe battle the concept of climate change ideologically, and practical people wonder if things are getting worse. It would seem to be true that there are more hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, and every other kind of natural disaster than ever before. And while the naysayers try to educate us on how everything we are seeing climate-wise can be explained by the normal variations, the doomsdayers make their case for the opposite - that nothing about this is normal.

World Economy In 2012

The world economy in 2012 is another sign of trouble. If you live in the US you know that jobs are scarce, government safety nets are in jeopardy for those who need help, property of all kinds is upside down and foreclosure rates continue to be high, prices of food and fuel make the cost of living a never-ending upward arrow, and so on. In Europe, the collapse of the euro and some sort of financial meltdown seem inevitable, while the undeveloped third world barely makes the news at all anymore. This all prompts more people to ask, when is the end of the world coming? How can it be very far away?

The Environment And Sustainability 2012

As for environment and sustainability, 2012 is showing that the world is running out of oil, minerals, water, clean air, trees, and just about anything else you can think of that we need to stay alive in our current style of living. We also have way too many people on our small planet, and that will make us run out of everything even sooner.  The possibility of world famine due to weather changes, pollution, and the end of cheap oil is not something on the fringe - it's in the daily news and on everyone's mind, and it's one more of the signs of world ending happenings in this year of 2012.

Medicine 2012

Multiplying and mysterious cases of flesh-eating bacteria are in the news as I write this segment on medicine 2012 and the end of the world. Pollution of the water we drink and the air we breathe is not stopping or even slowing down, and we are getting sicker because of it. Antibiotics are becoming gradually useless, and many people fear going to the hospital because of super-virulent strains of infection. Bird and swine flu pandemics are an absolute possibility, and we all seem helpless to change these developments. Modern medicine seems to have been taken over by the pharmaceutical and insurance companies, making a lot of money to suppress symptoms as we keep getting sicker.

Technology 2012

In 2012, consider the state of technology in our world. We in the developed countries have become absolutely addicted to our web connections, cellphones, computers, mp3 players, and every other gadget we can't live without. There are real support groups for addictions to the Internet, video-games, and smart phones, and academics are making their fortunes and establishing reputations on studies of these maladies. This is just another piece of evidence that should encourage us to ask, what is the world coming to? Or maybe even, when is the end of the world coming?

Current Events In 2012

Every day brings us news of the world that is not only up to the minute, but is overwhelming in its volume.

Look at the current events in 2012 - the threat of new wars and of world nuclear war, the possibility of social breakdown here and abroad, the political maneuverings of our own leaders and the behavior of increasingly off-kilter leaders of other countries are enough to make anyone think that 2012 could be the year that it all comes together, that the world will end.

So Should We Worry About How To Prepare For 2012?

Is The End Of The World True Or Unlikely?

So, all things considered, are Mayan predictions for 2012 anything to worry about? Based on a brief look at what the Mayans actually said, we don't need to be too concerned with them and their interlocking calendars. If you believe the prediction of 2012 being the end of the world because of carvings and scrawlings on buildings and rocks made over a thousand years ago by time worshippers fond of human sacrifice and self-mutilation, you do have plenty of company.

But if you have the opinion that, for end of the world predictions, 2012 is possibly just the time that many threads and events will come together in a perfect apocalyptic storm, like an electromagnetic pulse from a solar flare, you wouldn't be alone either. Our current technology is extremely vulnerable to a catastrophe such as that.

Even those who feel nothing will happen on December 21, 2012 cannot ignore the buzz in the spiritual realm. Harmonic convergence followers, sweat lodges, psychic healing, channeling prophets, gurus and spiritual leaders of all kinds have become more commonplace in recent decades. What many of these believers have in common is a firm faith that something big is bound to happen, and soon.

It seems like a good time to simplify, lighten your load, and take time to enjoy life while you can. We're taking it a day at a time and enjoying our current solitude. We'll see you somewhere down the road, and maybe we'll get together around a campfire somewhere in the darkness and talk about it, a couple of years from now...maybe in 2014?

Thanks for posting - trigger happy governments is certainly a valid concern!

I think if we were forced to "pick a theory" ours would be that it wouldn't happen overnight - but slowly and something we couldn't reverse. Technology is one of our biggest concerns...because it has advanced so fast and everyone uses it - but long term consequences cannot be seen for decades. Just today an article on CNN talked about increased leukemia rates with children getting CT scans. Cell phones can't be ignored, in our opinion, either. Wifi waves everywhere in the air now, even McDonalds...I have to struggle to find dentists who don't demand xrays every year, because I don't believe in them, etc...So we lean more toward gradual catastrophe rather than one day we're here, one day we're gone.

In sum, technological advancements at first helped us thrive and live longer and, in the end, they will be our downfall because it became about money/business/profits/greed instead of being "useful" - which would be completely ironic.

Thanks again!

Trigger happy governments is what I'm worried about.

Actually, Doomsday crowing is one of my favourite subjects - people come up with the most fascinating theories. Listening to some (not included here - just to clarify :), one wonders how on Earth we managed to survive that long?

Why spend our short lives worrying about things of which we have absolutely no control over. And, I figure, if the world ends, it will be of natural causes because the Lord won't be using anything man made, so that narrows it down a bit. With that said, that time of distruction is up to the Lord and I am happy to leave the decision in His hands. Now, we are back to my first sentence...why worry?!! Enjoy what we have and find pleasure in the small things! Entertaining article leaving room for plenty of speculation from all of us opionionated readers! Thanks for sharing! :)

I can't imagine, but I try to enjoy my life here and now. I know I won't last forever, even if the world goes on.

Thanks Tolovaj - so glad you found it a fun read!

I don't know when the world will end but i am pretty sure I will not care anymore at that special moment...
Fun read, thumbs up!

Hi Kajohu - Thanks for commenting! We agree with you...not so certain anything will happen in 2012. However, unlike "predictions" that failed miserably throughout history, where we sorta snickered after the hype passed and we were still living, we do feel concern about how so many things are happening in the world at once. Taken alone, they can be dismissed...but putting together climate, economics, medicine, etc. into that perfect storm will mean on the morning of December 22, 2012, we won't feel a whole lot better about things in our world -nor more safe/relieved. Plus, we will be tired from celebrating Janet21's birthday the night before!! Thanks again for sharing!

kajohu on 05/21/2012

I don't think the world will end anytime soon based on the Mayan calendar :-) But I do think there's the possibility of severe problems stemming from any of the problems you list above. I've been amused by some of our more "new-agey" friends (is the term "New Age" even used that much any more, or I'm I dating myself?) who do believe that 2012 will bring something huge just because it's 2012. I just don't believe it. Or I'll believe it when I see it!

Someone on Zazzle should make a December 21st birthday shirt with a funny world ending saying on it. I would so wear it!

frugalrvers on 05/20/2012

That is hilarious! Look on the bright side, it is like the whole world is celebrating your birthday this year. What other year can you think of where you could proudly walk around in a 12/21/2012 t shirt...and see others wearing the same?!
