Best Vitamin C Serum for Your Skin

by Angel

Vitamin C serum benefits for your skin and best ones to purchase.

Vitamin C Serum is a powerful antioxidant that works magic on wrinkles, hyper-pigmentation, and acne. It is best in the form of a serum as it is usually found in higher concentrations in serum form. Serums are of a thinner consistency and can penetrate deeper into skin. There are many different serums available on the market today. Which ones are effective? Which ones are the best value? Understanding a little about Vitamin C will help you better determine which Vitamin C serums will be best for you and your skin.

The Scoop on Vitamin C Serum

There are few things you should know about Vitamin C serum so that you will be purchasing an effective product. Vitamin C is used in skin care in the form of its derivative L-absorbic acid. It is very unstable. Meaning it oxidizes very quickly. Once it oxidizes it provides no benefits for your skin. It has a very short shelf life. You don't want to purchase a Vitamin C serum that has been sitting for a long time in someone's inventory.

Oxidation will turn the serum a yellowish orange or brown color. If yours is this color you need to DISCARD it. If you purchase new Vitamin C serum and it is this color when you get it then you should ask for your money back.

What Concentration of Vitamin C Is Effective?

There are varying opinions on this. From my research it seems that as little as 5% can be effective but it is best in concentrations of 15 -20%. I would suggest it in concentrations of the 15-20% range if you have normal, dry, or combination skin. If using for acne or have sensitive skin I would stay in the 5-10% range as it can be irritating to your skin in higher concentrations.

Vitamin C or L-absorbic acid can be irritating to your skin. Test a small area of your face near your ear for a few days to make sure it does not irritate your skin. Especially sensitive skin. You will feel a tingle or two when applying to your skin. Some people experience a little redness around their nose area for the first few days of application. It usually goes away after using it a few days. If not, then try a lower concentration.

Dr. Rajani's Suggestions on Vitamin C Serum

What are the Benefits of Vitamin C Serum?

Vitamin C is a very powerful antioxidant that can even reverse damage to your skin from the sun and free radicals. It boosts collagen production, repairs sun damage, lightens and evens out skin tone from dark spots and improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Vitamin C serum is a must have for your skin care regimen.

How and When to Apply Vitamin C Serum

To apply just squirt a dime size amount onto your hands and rub together. Then apply to your face, neck, and decollete area.

Vitamin C Serum can be applied at night and during the day. It works along with your sunscreen during the day to prevent sun damage. I have always applied mine in the morning under my makeup. That was until I did a little more research on Vitamin C serum and found out that it may be best to also apply it at night. Check out what Dr. Schultz has to say about applying antioxidants to your skin and why you get the best benefit when applied at night.

Best Vitamin C Serums

I have been using Vitamin C Serum for quite some time and have my favorites out of the many available. These serums have never arrived to me oxidized and have always produced excellent results. Another great thing about all of these are the very reasonable prices.

How to Make Vitamin C Serum at Home

One way to assure yourself that you have fresh Vitamin C serum is to make your own at home. It is very easy and economical as well.

Ingredients

  • L absorbic acid in powder form
  • distilled water
  • glycerin

L absorbic acid can be found online or in any health food store. DO NOT use Vitamin C tablets. Pure Glycerin is best to use as a base.

Mix ¼ teaspoon of L-absorbic acid with 1 teaspoon of distilled water

Stir until the powder dissolves

Add 1 teaspoon of glycerin and mix together well

Keep the mixture in a dark container and out of direct sunlight. Only make enough to last a week at most.

I love serums. A lot of times they'll do double duty as moisturizers too.

Hi Katie! You are so right... all of these things can add up price wise... it is best to know what you are getting so you don't spend too much for something that isn't going to work well for you. I have always purchased my Vit C serum just because I don't have time to make things like this with 4 kids.. However, I will be attempting to make my own with this recipe as soon as what I have runs out. It is so easy to do....or seems that way.

Thanks Pinkchic18! I love researching stuff like this. It is so helpful when I go to a beauty store and am bombarded with so many different selections to choose from. It really helps to know things like this so you can get the most for your money.. All of this stuff is so expensive and it would be a shame to purchase something that really isn't benefiting you much.
