Delicious Cakes & Treats

Birthdays are such special times that they really do need a delicious cake to help you celebrate them.   As a mom I often just get a plain cake and decorate it as my dd loves her birthday cake to look pretty special as opposed to what it tastes like inside.

As a person I want my cake to taste delicious - preferably chocolate flavored - and I don't actually care what it looks like, although if I can get both a decadent, delicious chocolate cake that looks like something from the Ace of Cakes then I'd think I'd died and gone to Cake Heaven!

Every holiday should be a chance to eat cake in my opinion or at the very least some form of delicious sweet treat anyway.   Whether it's Valentine's Day, 4th of July, Halloween or Christmas there are cakes and treats to be had, but even if you don't have a plethora of different recipes in your cooking repoirtoir never fear as help is here!

I have a basic cookie recipe and a basic cupcake recipe that can work for any season thanks to cookie cutters and cupcake wrappers and picks.   So don't be discouraged by thinking you need to be able to make lots of different things :)

The red velvet cupcake seems to be all the rage at Valentine's Day in the States, but living 'down under' I hadn't tried this type of cupcake until 2011 - I absolutely loved it and can definitely see the attraction.

Before being introduced to America's favorite Valentine cupcake I believed the only cupcakes to serve for Valentine's Day just had to be chocolate!

When it comes to Valentine's Day cookies I usually just make a basic cookie dough that can be rolled out and I use my heart shaped cookie cutters.   I love the Valentine's Day set I've 'discovered' below however as they don't just have hearts instead you can spell the word love along with other ideas - awesome!

One year I actually cut out heart shapes from the cookie dough and then cut a smaller heart out of the middle of half of the hearts.   After they had baked and cooled I added some homemade strawberry jam (jelly) to the 'whole hearts' and topped them with the heart cut out heart pieces.   They looked great and my hubby called them his romantic shrewsberrys (after a favorite biscuit of his).

The cupcake wrappers below are ideal for Independance Day cupcakes.   If I was hosting a 4th of July party I'd make a batch of chocolate and a batch of vanilla cupcakes using some cool wrappers like those featured.   I would then use frosting/icing in three different colors - red, white and blue.

I've seen people actually ice the flag on top of cupcakes and I think that's awesome, but I'm not sure I could manage that, however I could use the red, white and blue cupcakes and arrange them on a platter so that they looked like the stars and stripes.

I must admit it's only in recent years that I've thought about making Christmas cupcakes as I used to just make Christmas cookies  (some for my daughter and a couple for Santa), rumballs, fudge and chocolate truffles.

Cupcakes are becoming more and more popular however and as I also love them they are going on our holiday checklist this year.   How elaborate I get with them depends, I might just use some of these goodies to add Christmas cheer to my usual recipes.......

I've been making Christmas cookies since my daughter was born and she usually loves to help, last Christmas we spent the Christmas staying with family overseas and I didn't get to make any - apparently if we go away again I have to take the cookie cutters!

Yes, it's not the type of cookie that's important it's the shape.   I use a basic cookie dough recipe (you could even buy cookie dough from the shop if you wanted) and I use Christmas cookie cutters to make ours.   I usually make Christmas trees although I do have snowmen, Santa and candy cane cutters as well.

I like to make Christmas trees because then I ice them and my daughter gets to add sprinkles and cabouchons to the tree as though she's decorating a real tree and they look pretty special.
