De-cluttering:

The first step in organizing a closet is de-cluttering. This is a process in which you go through each and every thing you own and get rid of the things you no longer need.  Begin with your clothes. If there are clothing items that you have not worn in more than a year then consider donating it to someone or having a garage sale.  Do the same thing with your shoes.  Don’t hang on to things that you “might” wear. This will serve only to take up space and make what seems to be a small space, even smaller. Make a rule that each time you buy something new, you get rid of something you already have in your closet.  Learn how to de-clutter and make it your lifestyle!

Utilize Wall Space

There is much more space in your closet than you may think.  Are you utilizing the wall space? If not, invest in a few shelves. The more shelves you have, the more space you will have to store things.  There are even shelving solutions made specifically for closets. Build your own or find a shelving solution that meets your needs.  Empty walls are a waste of space in your closet.

Out with the Shoe Boxes!

The shoe boxes that you are using to store important documents are taking up too much space.  Instead of using bulky shoes boxes to store pictures, important documents, and other memoirs, invest in plastic bins that sit nicely on top of each other. Do you have space in your closet for a filing cabinet? This is a creative solution to organizing all of those papers you have from years past.  Labeling will also be important.  Every bin in your closet should be labeled.  This will make your life easier when you try to find something in the tiny cramped space.  Invest in a label gun or simply use an index card taped onto the front of each box that lists the bin’s contents.

Take advantage of organizers

There are many companies who sell creative solutions to your organizational problem.  From shoe organizers to hangers that will allow you to hang several shirts at one time, there are countless storage solutions available for your use.  Simply do a search of the web to find the most creative solutions that will work for you.

Put things where they belong

Once you have de-cluttered the space, have shelving units to take advantage of empty wall space, invested in organizers, and properly labeled your things, you will have a new, organized closest that makes the most out of every inch of space that you have.  It is important that you realize the importance of putting things where they belong.  In as little as a couple of hours, your closet can become unorganized again! Make the effort to keep it organized by putting things where they belong each and every time you use them.
