Vitamin E : Antioxidant, Tocopherols

Vitamin E is a crucial nutrient with an antioxidant capability. The tocopherols prevent oxidation, which cause fats to turn rancid and destroys vitamins A and D.

Vitamin E has many benefits, including protection against cancers and heart disease. It works at the cellular level within the body and may slow down ageing.

Tocotrienol - Vitamin E

Vitamin E :

  • Helps to protect against heart disease, certain cancers and various chronic ailments.
  • May delay or prevent cataracts.
  • Enhances the immune system.
  • Protects the lungs against toxins from cigarette smoke and other pollutants.
  • Aids in skin healing.
  • Maintains healthy red blood cells and muscular tissue.
  • Regulates the synthesis of vitamin C and DNA.

Warning: If you are on prescription blood-thinning drugs (anticoagulants, such as warfarin) or aspirin, you should consult your doctor before using vitamin E.

You should also refrain from taking vitamin E two days before and after surgery.

What Is Vitamin E?

Vitamin E is a generic name for tocopherols – a group of related compounds which occur in four major forms:

  • alpha-tocopherols – the most common, prevalent and most potent form.
  • beta-tocopherols
  • gamma-tocopherols
  • delta-tocopherols.

Vitamin E is fat-soluble. Unlike other fat-soluble vitamins, tocopherols do not accumulate to toxic levels in the body.

Vitamin E is stored for relatively long periods in the body, mainly in fatty tissue and the liver. It is excreted in the stools. It is found in relatively few foods, many of which are high in fat.

This makes it difficult to obtain the right levels of vitamin E, if on a low-fat diet. Supplements are therefore very useful in obtaining optimal amounts of vitamin E.

What Does Vitamin E Do?

Vitamin E:

  • Protects cell membranes.
  • Helps the body to use selenium and vitamin K.
  • It has disease-fighting potential as an antioxidant – assists in destroying or neutralizing free radicals (those nasty unstable oxygen molecules that damage cells).

As an antioxidant, and by safeguarding cell membranes, vitamin E offers:

  • Prevention of some cancers (e.g. prostrate cancer).
  • Protects against cardiovascular disease, including heart attacks and strokes.
  • Reduces the harmful effects of LDL cholesterol (the bad one).
  • Prevents blood clots.
  • Reduces inflammatory processes.
  • May prevent angina.
  • Taken with vitamin C, it may help block some harmful effects of fatty meals.

How To Take Vitamin E.

  • To benefit from the disease-fighting potential, 250mg to 500mg a day (including that within multivitamins), in capsule or tablet form.
  • Doses up to 800mg a day, if there is a high risk of heart disease and certain cancers.
  • May be particularly effective if taken with vitamin C.

Vitamin E should be taken at the same time every day, with a meal (in order to decrease stomach irritation). This increases the absorption of this fat-soluble nutrient.

For topical use, break open a capsule and apply to the skin. You may also use a cream containing vitamin E.

Choose natural vitamin E (d-alpha), rather than synthetic (dl-alpha), as the natural form is more effective in crossing the blood-brain barrier.

Some labels give doses in IU (International Units): one IU = 0.67mg.

All links are appreciated. Your tip about Omega-3 is very useful, thanks.

A good combination is with omega-3, since vitamin E is fat-soluble. Your page is great! I plan to link to it when I get around to writing about walnuts :-)
