Interesting painting, but I guess someone had $120 million just burning a hole in their pocket :) I can't imagine spending that much money on a single painting so a copy is sounding pretty great to me.

Yes, beheading is still very much used, notably in China and Afghanistan.

Hanging as a public spectacle pretty much depends where you are. American hangings take place within prison grounds. Only a handful of official witnesses are present. At the other end of the scale, Iranian hangings take place in public squares with thousands of people encouraged to turn up. It's not really down to the judge in any country, but the laws themselves.

As for hanging, is public hanging still carried out? As in, is it stated that executions by hanging is supposed to be carried out in public, or is it based on the judge's interpretation?
(And I need to separate reading and eating time...)

The thing that astounds me about Albert Pierrepoint at least (I don't know about Harry and Thomas) is that he was an OPPONENT of the death penalty. He didn't think that it did any good, despite 900 hangings carried out by him and his family.

I'm only writing articles on applications of the death penalty still in use today. The reason is so they can be used whenever someone suggests that they're 'humane'. Fortunately for the French, and the rest of the world, Madame Guillotine was retired in 1981.

She will get a mention when I write about beheading though. That's still used in several countries, but the method is a swipe of a sword or axe.
