Kids Movies with Songs

Kids Movies with Songs presents a collection of our favorite songs from some of the most memorable movies ever made for children and families.

From our Family to Yours

A Gift of Joy, Inspiration and Laughter

I hired the help of two of the most trusted consultants I know on the subject, my daughters Anika (age 14) and Aisha (age 8). As you can imagine, it wasn't always a smooth ride. Anika was transfixed by the songs from The Sound of Music, although she tried not to show it.

Aisha, the younger one, was a different story. She sang along with every song we picked, especially Do-Re-Mi from The Sound of Music and Tomorrow from Annie. She even found a karaoke version of Tomorrow on Youtube and practiced with it until we had to send her off to bed.

They whole-heartedly agreed with two of my selections of the movies: The Sound of Music and Annie. (Aisha suggested Lion King.) However, they had definite opinions on which songs from the movies should be featured in the top-four. There was some discussion, some give and take, some back and forth. Even their mom jumped into the fray.

So here's our picks. Consider it a Holiday gift from our family to yours. We hope it brings you joy, laughter and many good times. We can't think of a better gift.

"Keep me away from wisdom that does not cry, philosophy that does not laugh, greatness that does not bow before children." ~ Khalil Gibran

The Sound of Music

A timeless classic, The Sound of Music is a story of Maria, a nun-in-training who loves to sing and sent off to look after the 7 children of Georg, an Austrian navy captain. As she falls in love with the children and the captain, she finds her true calling.

Choosing 4 songs from a total of 16 in this movie was a difficult task. As you can imagine, we had quite a bit of disagreement. I wanted to pick Edelweiss at the Festival, which gives me goose bumps every time I hear it, even though I have never set foot in Austria. (Edelweiss is an Austrian flower and the song is Georg's tribute to his beloved country.) My wife wanted My Favorite Things. The girls picked the rest. I have to admit, So Long and The Lonely Goatherd are my favorite too. I love to yodel along with the latter and love it even more when I get strange looks from my daughters.

The Lion King

The Lion King is the story of a little lion cub who is destined to be a king. As he looks for his place in the "circle of life," he loses his way and finds it again with the help of his friends.

One of my all-time favorite songs is The Circle of Life. We all sing it out load when we drive around the town. I think it's one of the best ways for a digital-age father to impart his wisdom on life to the next generation. I have had to rein in my enthusiasm for singing quite a bit lately, however, as my older daughter has refused to ride with me unless I stop. Oh, well.

Can You Feel the Love Tonight used to be Anika's favorite. I have never asked her why.

Songs from The Lion King

Wikipedia on The Lion King

The Lion King is a world-wide, multimillion-dollar Walt Disney franchise. The success of the original 1994 American animated feature, The Lion King, directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff, led to two direct-to-video sequel films, a spin-off television series, several video games, merchandise, and the 7th longest-running musical in Broadway history, The Lion King Broadway, which garnered 6 Tony awards including Best Musical.

Annie

Annie, who grows up in an orphanage and longs to find a real home, has a thing or two to teach the grownups. I think she is a terrific role model to the girls.

I admit, I have never watched this movie end-to-end, but  my daughters have. Many times. Hearing Aisha sing Tomorrow along with a Youtube karaoke as we prepared this collection was one of the sweetest moments of my life.
