Tibetan Singing Bowls for Meditation and Healing

by Roohi

If you are looking for a tool to aid you in your meditation practice that promotes physical as well as emotional healing, try using Tibetan singing bowls.

Tibetan singing bowls, also known as Himalayan bowls or ring gongs, were traditionally used for meditation. However, these days, the gorgeous looking singing bowls are not only used for enhancing the positive effects of meditation but also for healing purposes by various health professionals and spiritual teachers.

What are Tibetan singing bowls?

In very simple words we can say that Tibetan singing bowls are a type of bell. However, unlike other bells which are usually attached to a handle and hung inverted, these are shaped like bowls and placed on the ground.

A padded mallet is used to strike the rims of the singing bowls and produce beautiful singing sounds. The vibrations produced on playing these healing bells are supposed to have a curative effect on the body, mind and emotions.

History and origin of the Himalayan bowls

Singing bowls were traditionally used in Tibetan Buddhist meditation practice. The mallet was used to strike the rims of the bowls to indicate the beginning and end of silent meditation. In various other cultures, these singing bowls may be accompanied with chanting, often striking these when a particular phrase or word is spoken.

Not much is known about the history of these Tibetan singing bowls. However, Tibetan paintings and statues dating from several centuries ago have been found to describe what looks like these healing bowls. Bronze singing bowls have been found in collections dating back to the 10-12th century.

These singing bowls can be found in Tibetan monasteries even these days where they are used for meditation. In Japan, you will find these healing bells in every temple. Japanese use these singing bowls for funeral rites as well as ancestor worship.

Uses of the singing bowls

As already mentioned, Tibetan singing bowls can be used to add that further healing touch to your meditation or breathing practice. The sounds produced from these bells are believed to move the brain into the deeper Alpha and Theta wave frequencies. This means you will be able to go into a deeper meditative state.

Meditation done with the help of the sounds emanating from these ring gongs is believed to produce clarity of mind and promote intuition. The deep, rich tone produced by these healing bowls is believed to reduce stress, balance the mind, body and spirit, as well as increase energy and vitality.

Some healthcare professionals place these Himalayan bowls directly on the body because they believe that the sound vibrations can be transferred to each and every cell of the body through the water present in the system. These sound vibrations are believed to strengthen the immune system as well as offer pain relief. These may also have a healing effect on the body and help in treating various medical disorders.

While further research is definitely required to say with conviction that sound healing through Tibetan singing bowls can indeed heal medical disorders, one thing can be said for sure. Anything that promotes healing on the mental, emotional, and spiritual plane has a profound effect on the physical level as well.

So, if you are suffering from any physiological disorder, it may be a good idea to accompany your regular medical treatment with a regular daily practice of healing with the help of these Tibetan singing bowls. These healing bells are used by healthcare practitioners to treat medical conditions such as cancer and post-traumatic stress disorder.

If you are not planning to use these singing bowls for treating any physical or mental disorders, just use these for promoting relaxation, well-being, and intuition. These singing bowls are particularly useful for Chakra healing. Different sizes of these bowls are used to have the appropriate effect on the right energy center.

Singing bowls are also used in Feng shui for clearing bad chi and attracting positive chi into the house. Playing the singing bowls with the help of a mallet is believed to promote harmonious relationships among family members.

Different sizes of Tibetan singing bowls

Sizes of the Tibetan singing bowls generally range from six to twelve inches. These healing bells are, however, in sizes of 4 and 5 inches as well. The six inch bowls work on the Third Eye and the Crown Chakra. The seven inch bowls are believed to align the seven Chakras and the eight inch ones operate on the Throat Chakra. The eight inch bowls are also often used for past life work and lucid dreaming.

The nine inch bowls work on promoting psychological imbalances. Use the ten inch Tibetan singing bowls to work on the Solar Plexus as well as add that further power to your manifestations and prayers. For getting rid of emotional pain that is almost inaccessible, use the twelve inch bowls.

How to play the Tibetan singing bowls

Use the padded mallet to create beautiful and healing sounds from the Tibetan singing bowls. Gently strike the bowls against the side and then rub the mallet in a circular motion around the outside edge of the rim. Don't go too fast and make sure to apply pressure with the mallet.

You can add water to your singing bowl to produce a different kind of sound. Just make sure not to wet the outside rim of bowl.

As the Tibetan singing bowl picks up the vibration, allow the sound to build up slowly. Enjoy the healing effects of this traditional Buddhist meditative tool and experience its positive effects on your mind, body and spirit.
